Bloomsday Festival 2025: The Waking Dead with Patrick Callan | James Joyce Centre

Jun 15, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Dublin
Arts
Literary Arts
Join us at The James Joyce Centre for a special Bloomsday Festival launch of an exciting new work of scholarship by historian Patrick Callan on Sunday, June 15th at 7pm. Death in Dublin During the Era of James Joyce’s Ulysses (2025, Routledge) focuses on the funeral of Paddy Dignam in James Joyce’s Ulysses, which serves as the pivotal event of the ‘Hades’ episode. This volume explores how Dignam’s interment in Glasnevin Cemetery allowed Joyce the freedom to consider the conventions, rituals and superstitions associated with death and burial in Dublin. Integrating the words and characters of Ulysses with its figurative locale, the book looks at the presence of Dublin in Ulysses, and Ulysses in Dublin. It emphasises the highly visible public role assigned to death in Joyce’s world, while also appreciating how it is woven into the universe of Ulysses. The study examines the role of Glasnevin Cemetery – where the Joyce family plot was opened in 1880 and remained in use for eight decades – as well as the social and medical problems associated with life in Dublin, a city divided by class, status, wealth and health. Nineteen burials took place in Glasnevin on 16 June 1904, and the analysis of this group illuminates the role of undertakers and insurers, along with the importance of memorialisation. This book is an important contribution to Joyce and Irish studies, as well as to international studies related to the treatment of the dead body and the development of garden cemeteries. Author Patrick Callan will offer insights of his work and answer questions from the audience. The talk will be followed by music and readings to celebrate the eve of Bloomsday, June 16th. Patrick Callan is Visiting Research Fellow at Trinity College Dublin. His work on Ulysses and the role of radio in Joyce’s work has appeared in the James Joyce Quarterly (2021), the Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television (2019), and the Dublin James Joyce Journal (2018–20). The event is free but booking is essential. Doors open at 6.30pm. The Bloomsday Festival is organised by The James Joyce Centre in partnership with Fáilte Ireland, Olhausen's Sausages, and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. Bloomsday Festival 2025: The Dubliners Dilemma | James Joyce Centre

Jun 16, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Dublin
Arts
Theater
Join us at The James Joyce Centre for a special Bloomsday performance of Declan Gorman's acclaimed one-act play The Dubliners Dilemma on Monday, June 16th at 4pm. The Dubliners Dilemma was premiered in Ireland in 2012 and has toured to Norway, USA, India, Russia, and all over Ireland. Described as a “truly mesmerizing performance” (Metro Herald), it finds London publisher Grant Richards re-reading the manuscript of Dubliners in 1914, eight full years after he initially rejected it on the grounds it might breach strict obscenity laws. Joyce’s Dublin comes to wild life around him, a city of innocence and perversion: of sexual predators, gigolos, gamblers and drinkers mingling among street children, housemaids and exquisite concert singers. Entranced again by the literary gifts of the truculent Irish author who refused to change a single word, Richards must decide whether to take the risk second time around, and be the one finally to bring the genius of Joyce to the world. Written and performed by Declan Gorman. Directed by Gerard Lee. “Gorman holds the audience enraptured throughout with a truly mesmerising performance. This original adaptation is by no means exclusively for die-hard Joyce fans, making a brilliant introduction for newcomers!” Metro Herald, Dublin “Gorman is a compelling performer, at his best when undertaking childhood roles and in his element with Joyce’s obsequious characters … an animated and intelligent performance.” Irish Theatre Magazine Tickets are €15. The Bloomsday Festival is organised by The James Joyce Centre in partnership with Fáilte Ireland, Olhausen’s Sausages, and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. This year our big group of six - actors Mark Wale, Paul O'Hanrahan, Mick Greer, Paul Dornan, Chris Bilton and musician John Goudie - present 'The Many Trials of Leopold Bloom' in which Bloom finds himself in a shady part of Dublin at night and his desires, guilt and fears are converted into comedy nightmares and fantasies. Our show is based on the opening half of the 'Circe' episode of Ulysses which takes place in the late evening of June 16th and is set in Nighttown, Joyce's name for the notorious 'Monto' area of Dublin where Bloom is looking for Stephen Dedalus. Tour for People who are Hard of Hearing Thursday 19 June 2025, 11am Join us for a tour of Francis Bacon's Studio and a discussion of the project that brought it to Dublin with Claire Crowley. For these tours, we use devices as individual loop devices which connect with a microphone headset worn by the tour guide, that can transit to the loop devices. They can then be used by people with hearing aids to connect to or for those hard of hearing but who don't have hearing aids, they can use their own or ADI's earpieces. Free, booking is essential. For Hearing Aid users: Information on the T setting and Tours It is necessary to have access to your T setting on your hearing aid to connect to the tour guide equipment. Not all hearing aids actually have the T setting as part of their standard functions. However, the majority of hearing aids provided by the HSE do have the T setting available. The hearing aids need to be programmed by the audiologist to include the T-coil program/Loop program/ T setting. Then the hearing aid user needs to understand how to access that program option, which is usually through pressing a button on their hearing aid or selecting this program from a drop-down list on an app on their mobile phone. Many hearing aids now have Bluetooth programs/ Bluetooth compatibility access as standard, however, these tend to be designed to function with brand-specific products and are not compatible with the equipment being used during this tour.
