Feb 16, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Glasgow
Puppet Wrangling workshop. A crash course for grown ups where we will do wild and bizarre things - with puppets! Run by theatre maker Gavin Glover, this will be a new and irreverent approach to puppet theatre and manipulation inspired by absurdist storytellers such as Kafka, Lynch and Beckett. Suitable for all professionals working in performance, physical theatre, acting, clowning and of course puppeteers. Gavin has always worked in the more mysterious side of contemporary puppet theatre, originally touring a deliciously dark style of work with the cult theatre company Faulty Optic. More recently he has 'trained' ghosts for the National Theatre of Scotland, 'tamed' foul-mouthed pterodactyls for the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow and 'encouraged' drunken bar fights at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. He also makes little movies and regularly teaches micro cinema film making techniques to other makers of film and theatre. In this very practical performance workshop you will work individually and in groups to improvise with and without puppets. Please wear suitable clothing for stage movement. Please bring a packed lunch. There will be tea and coffee available! Please let us know if you would not like to be photographed in advance, thanks. See more of Gavin's work at www.potatoroom.co.uk Email for questions about the content of the workshop: mrgavinglover@gmail.com Email for questions about the venue, tickets and administration: hello@houseoftoad.co.uk Please note that we must sell a minimum of 7 tickets for this event to go ahead. Theatre-making exchange: referencing South Africa’s workshop theatre-making | James Arnott Theatre, Gilmorehill Centre
Feb 24, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Glasgow
This workshop, led by Hamish Mabala Neill, is aimed at theatre-makers, directors, and performers, and will offer some insight into a theatre-making practice from a different global context. South Africa’s theatre scene is known by key works like WOZA ALBERT, The Island, and Sophiatown – all of which drew from the theatre-making practices developed in the 60s and 70s that came as a result of the political apartheid imposed. Importantly, this is NOT a South African theatre-making workshop. This does not yet exist in our context as there are so many streams, influences and styles present across our context. It is, however, a theatre-making workshop that highlight some of the common theatre making practices from the broader South African Theatre making scene. Hamish Mabala Neillis a Global South Visiting Fellow in Theatre Studies at the University of Glasgow. He is an Applied Drama/Theatre lecturer, project leader, and current Director of the Creative Research Hub (CRH) at Drama for Life, of the University of the Witwartersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Hamish has worked on multiple, diverse, award winning (industry and civic), theatre-for-social-change projects including Through Positive Eyes (2012-13), AfriQueer (2015-17), and as initiator and lead of the celebrated applied theatre and public health project, Knowledge UNZIPPED (2016-2024). Creative Conversations: Greg Thomas | University Chapel
Feb 24, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Glasgow
Greg Thomas is a poet, artist, and writer based in Glasgow, with a particular interest in making and writing about concrete and visual poetries. He wrote the first book on concrete poetry in Britain and has several published collections of poetry including: SPIRES/SPINES. PAPERVIEW, 2024.
A collection of poems and poem-objects from 2009-13, including works on found wood, stone, and glass, letter-transfer poems, acetone transfers, lino-tile poems, and felt-tip pen poems.
THRESHHOLDS. TIMGLASET, 2023.
A new collection of short and visually oriented poems, a sequel of sorts to particulates. Including the sequence the skin of the sky: poems in the Faroe Islands. In Greg Thomas’s exquisite new collection, meaning emerges at the threshold of sound and sense, breath and form, play and sincerity. Hanna Tuulikki.
CANDLE POEMS. POEM ATLAS, 2023.
My first full collection of poem-objects. Candles and wax sculptures in bees' and soya wax with alkyd and vegetable colouring and lettering in acrylic paint pen. There’s imagination and a subtle wit everywhere — in the making of the objects and in all the ways the book finds of showing them in action. Precarious, funny and moving, Candle Poems is a perfect small monument, to candles, to the bees and to us. Peter Manson.
PARTICULATES. TIMGLASET, 2022.
A collection of short poems and visually oriented poems mostly from 2021-22, including the sequence on book on drone on barra. written on Barra in September 2021. This quivering book! Each poem feels like a syntactic mirage: walking into a room and seeing dust particles in the light....poetry at its unwilting and unprogrammatic best. Colin Herd. Thomas's poetry often touches on themes of environmental crisis and the politics of climate change, as well as ways of communicating with and being in the natural world. He is also a freelance arts journalist, with bylines in The Guardian, Art Monthly, Scottish Art News, and other titles.

Far na Slighe: Shelagh Chaimbeul | Mitchell Library
Feb 27, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Glasgow
World Gaelic Week (24th February - 2nd March) celebrates Scottish Gaelic across the globe. To mark World Gaelic Week 2025 we welcome author Shelagh Chaimbeul, winner of the Gaelic New Writers Award 2023, to the Mitchell Library on Thursday 27th February to discuss her Scots Gaelic crime novel Far na Slighe, shortlisted for The Highland Society of London Prize for Best Fiction Book 2024. A summer's day in June 2004. Four teenagers are walking on the Fife Coastal Path near St Andrews when one of them, Amy, finds an unusual bracelet. 20 years later a new true crime series begins, Fuasgladh Cheist, which investigates suspicious and unexplained deaths. In the first program, Art Dawson is trying to find answers about the death of his sister, Joni, who fell while walking the Fife Coastal Path in June 2004. He has never believed the official verdict that it was an accident – what happened to her, and where is the priceless bracelet she was wearing? As soon as Amy sees a picture of the bracelet on Fuasgladh Cheist, she recognises it. She had no idea that the jewellery was connected to the death of a young girl, and has no idea what to do with it now, especially with so many people looking for it. Do the three others that were with Amy in 2004 know what happened to Joni? Why are they so reluctant to speak to her about their trip? And why is someone trying to make sure that the bracelet will never be found? Samhraidh san Ògmhios, 2004. Tha ceathrar deugairean a’ coiseachd air Slighe Chladach Fìobha faisg air Cill Rìmhinn nuair a gheibh tè dhiubh, Amy, lorg ai bann-làimhe eireachdail. 20 bliadhna an dèidh sin tha sreath ùr a’ nochdadh, Fuasgladh Cheist, anns am bithear a’ dèanamh sgrùdadh air bàsan amharasach. Sa chiad phrògram, tha Art Dawson a’ feuchainn ri freagairtean a lorg mu bàs a pheathar, Joni, a thuit far Slighe Chladach Fìobha san Ògmhios 2004. Cha robh esan a-riamh a’ creidsinn gum b’ e tubaist a bh’ ann: dè thachair dhi, agus càit an deach am bann-làimhe prìseil a bh’ oirre? Cho luath ’s a chì Amy dealbh den bhann-làimhe air Fuasgladh Cheist, tha i ga aithneachadh. Cha robh for aice gum b’ ann ceangailte ri bàs nighinn òig a bha am pìos seudraidh, agus chan eil for aice dè nì e leis a-nis, is daoine a’ coimhead air a shon. A bheil fios aig na triùir eile a bha còmhla ri Amy ann an 2004 dè thachair do Joni? Carson nach eil iad airson bruidhinn rithe mu dheidhinn an turais aca? Agus carson a tha cuideigin airson dèanamh cinnteach nach tèid am bann-làimhe a lorg idir?
