I love Paradors, I really do. I’ve stayed in many of them, and have mostly been very happy with the experience. But my recent stay in Ciudad Rodrigo was an unfortunate exception. When I first made a reservation, I (twice) emailed about parking, but never received an answer. When we arrived at the Parador, despite having booked two nights several months in advance, and despite it being the most expensive of the four Paradors we stayed at, we were given a very small room overlooking the parking area. The headboard and the bed were not attached, and the bed frame was on wheels, so the bed would end moving 15cm across the floor if you sat up in bed! On inspection, the frame was broken and had been badly welded. During our stay the Parador had several large groups for lunch or dinner, and these were clearly the highest priority with the staff, meaning it was hard to get served in the bar. Although several staff were friendly and helpful, as Parador staff usually are, there were a few who were either too busy, or who just didn’t care. One bar staff member was actually quite rude. Worst of all however was that we couldn’t even get to sleep on our second night, as there were screaming children running around until after midnight, from a party who were there for a function. The same children had spoiled our experience, and the experience of others, earlier in the evening, as we sat outside in the garden trying to appreciate the lovely sunset. All in all, this was not a pleasant stay, and this Parador is the only one that I will make a point of never visiting again.
