Burg Plankenstein

Very pleasant place to stay.

Don’t let the review title scare you; this place must be seen to be believed. What started as ruins in 2010 has been steadily improved through repairs and the addition of the most eclectic decor imaginable. There’s no theme to this castle. Its 12th century parts are austerely medieval, while its renovations include modern bathrooms, belle epoque decor, and an eccentric collection of art, armor, and taxidermy. Where else can you find a moose head above a suit of armor? Every room in the hotel is different. We stayed in #11, a suite that consisted of a large royal bedchamber and a small monk’s cell, plus two bathrooms. It was comfortable, entertaining, and quiet despite the fact that beds, floors, and doors all squeaked loudly. A once in a lifetime experience. Food at the restaurant/tavern was delicious, although breakfast options were limited. Service was fine, and the entire castle staff was friendly and helpful the whole time we were there. So that’s all good. If you’re looking for a thematically consistent castle experience, you won’t find it here. But if you want a quirky experience at a castle that is half finished, half restored, and bizarrely decorated and furnished, a night at Plankenstein will be an unforgettable experience.

The place itself is just wonderful. The castle tower we had, was probably the most charming room I've ever booked and the view was breathtaking. We truly loved it. Also booked the crime dinner and it was also a very cool event. Totally recommend both. Only drawback was the food and especially the breakfast, which was below expectations in quality and in selection. Still recommend going there. The "Mostviertel" area is worth exploring too.
