Our biggest misstep on this family trip to Yunnan was definitely the accommodation we booked. We initially planned for a two-night stay, but ended up changing it to just one overnight. I hadn't properly researched Kunming's districts and inadvertently chose a hotel in Guandu District. The hotel's location, near Kunming's Production Materials Market, felt rather industrial and on the city's outskirts—a bit like a bustling freight market area. Besides a commercial building nearby, the ground floor was filled with smoky fast-food stalls, and the bright lights at night made it very difficult to get any rest. Most crucially, the actual room looked nothing like the pictures online; it was incredibly cramped. The bathroom, in particular, was so tiny you could barely turn around. I also noticed several other similar budget apartment-style accommodations within the same building. All in all, it was my own poor judgment. We stayed just one night and checked out first thing the next morning. This kind of place might be suitable for young travelers, but it's definitely not ideal for families with both elderly and young children like ours.
