2 night stay with 2 dogs at a very reasonable price. Really friendly staff who seem genuinely trying to please so cannot fault that. Also welcoming of dogs that has to be commended. The location is also superb next to washford station and the line runs alongside the pub and beer garden so if your holiday involves the west Somerset railway you cannot physically get closer - our room overlooked the station. The room (room 4) was clean and pleasantly decorated with a bottle of water, tea (regular and lemon), instant coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits and a bottle of water (tap water in a Kilner bottle) along with cups and saucers and a pair of glasses. The bathroom was clean and the shower had excellent pressure and plentiful hot water. The towels were possibly past their first flush of youth but perfectly clean. Food was generally good to excellent although we both didn’t take to their signature marinated chicken, it wasn’t inedible but in all honesty it just didn’t look all that appetising (golden crispy skin looks better than the translucent and limp skin it comes with), the marinade was too sweet and the meat tasted too salty so I’m unsure how this came about so we ate a bit then brought the rest up to our dogs. The chicken was cooked well and not dry at all so no cause to complain and we paid our bill but chalked it up to a poor choice on our parts - just not to our taste. A real shame as the BBQ wings and burgers we had the other night were outstanding and the anti pasti we shared before the chicken was perfectly nice. Breakfast was delicious however both mornings. Unfortunately the bed in room 4 is not great with the divan collapsing in places under the thin mattress and the room wasn’t serviced in our stay. We only got 1 toilet roll provided and 2 (and a half used one) tiny tubes of shampoo aswell as a cash and carry own brand hand pump antibacterial soap. The outside of the building is now looking rather scruffy with peeling paint and rotting windows and the interior of the bar and dining area isn’t wearing its years well either. Without wishing to be rude or cause offence the landlord and landlady while very pleasant tend to sit with their friends and leave the barman to do everything if he’s there or just pop behind the bar to serve if he’s not - it’s their pub and they can run it as they wish however when a guest enters a pub with no one behind the bar, dirty glasses and bottles all over the bar and the owners are sat down drinking with their friends and rolling cigarettes or outside with them smoking and the landlord is using foul language it doesn’t create the most professional image. I gather it changed hands about a year or so ago and you get the impression from review sites and pictures the previous owner did things differently shall we say and now, sadly, the place has a feeling like something that’s on a very gradual slide so for that reason I’m not sure we’d return even though we were satisfied for our money on this occasion.
