Every ancient town in Europe has a cathedral, and Cuenca is no exception. In the main square of the old town stands a magnificent cathedral, Catedral de Santa. This is an ancient church and also the first Gothic-style church in Spain. Its main features are its spires, flying buttresses, and stained glass. The light and shadow that shine through the stained glass create a unique and beautiful light and shadow scene. After several renovations, the facade and tower were changed to Baroque style, which is very different from traditional Romanesque architecture. The entrance ticket costs €5.50, or you can buy a ticket for the cathedral + three arcades for €7, which includes an audio guide. On the way from Madrid to Seville, you will pass through several ancient towns located on the high plains. Typical tours often stop at a few places, such as the ancient city of Toledo and the windmill town of Consuegra. This time, we made a special stop at the less-visited 'cliffside mountain town' of Cuenca. When it comes to Cuenca, the most famous landmark is undoubtedly the 'Hanging Houses' (Casas Colgadas) perched on steep cliffs. The Hanging Houses were once a summer palace for the royal family and have undergone several renovations. In the 18th century, they were transformed into the town hall, and today they serve as an art museum and restaurant, showcasing Spanish abstract art. The houses are built on vertical cliffs that drop down to the river valley below, with balconies extending out over the rock face, creating a stunning visual effect. The town is connected to the outside world by a red steel bridge that spans the gorge, offering great photo opportunities. You can plan a day trip from Madrid or Valencia, or if you want to enjoy a moment of tranquility in the mountain town, you can choose to stay overnight at the Parador de Cuenca, a state-run hotel.

It was still early, so we decided to visit Mangana Tower. Passing through the old town's alleys Pharmacy Bus stop In the 16th century, in search of a suitable location to install a clock that could be heard throughout the city, the government renovated a tower here and named it Mangana Tower. What we see now is a 19th-century restoration in the Neo-Mudéjar style, with a square tower body and simple decorations. Mangana Tower once marked the boundary between the Jewish and Christian quarters. This is Cuenca's high point, offering views of the small town. Opposite the tower is a building of unknown purpose.

Next to the Iglesia de San Pedro is Cuenca Castle, located at the highest point of Cuenca's old town. It was an important part of the medieval defense system, with the current remains mainly consisting of walls and arches. The castle was built during the Islamic period and was converted into a military fortress after the Christian reconquest in 1177. It suffered severe damage during the Carlist Wars in the 19th century and gradually fell into ruin thereafter. The walls have iron stairs that allow visitors to climb and overlook the Huécar River gorge, the old town, and the new town. In the lower right corner of images 3-4 is the Archivo Histórico Provincial de Cuenca (Cuenca Provincial Historical Archive). Image 6 shows the Cathedral (left) and the Torre de Mangana (right). Image 7, from left to right, shows the Antiguo Convento de San Pablo (Old Convent of San Pablo), Puente de San Pablo (San Pablo Bridge), and the Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses). Image 8 shows the Hanging Houses. Images 9-10 show the Archivo Histórico Provincial de Cuenca, which was featured in National Geographic magazine and houses a large collection of prehistoric archaeological finds from Cuenca province. Image 11 shows the Historical Archive taken from below the cliff. Image 12 shows the statue of Fray Luis de León (1527-1591) next to the Historical Archive. León was born in Cuenca and was a religious poet and prose writer of the Spanish Renaissance, an Augustinian friar, and is known as the "King of Spanish Lyric Poetry."

Next stop: the viewing platform. Early morning in Cuenca, still not awake from its slumber. Only the mailman is going door to door delivering letters. Cuenca's old town has no flat roads; it's either uphill or downhill, making the mailman's job tough. Passing by the ruins of San Juan de Letrán Church. The small square in front of the ruins is called Plazuela de Federico Muelas, featuring a statue of Federico Muelas. Muelas (1909–1974) was a poet and essayist from Cuenca, an important figure in local literature and culture, with a profound influence on preserving and promoting Cuenca's urban image. A hotel beside the alley Many houses in Cuenca span across alleys San Pedro Church (Iglesia de San Pedro), originally built in the 12th century, was rebuilt in the 18th century with a rare octagonal floor plan. The last two photos show the San Pedro Church from Cuenca Castle. To the left is the 17th-century Carmelite Nuns' Convent (Carmelitas Descalzas), now a contemporary art center.

To the east of the Major Church is the massive Cuenca Cathedral. The full name of the cathedral is the Cathedral of Saint Mary and Saint Julian of Cuenca (Catedral de Santa María y San Julián de Cuenca). It was built from the late 12th century to the early 13th century on the site of a former Moorish mosque, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Cuenca’s patron saint, Saint Julian. In Figure 3, Cuenca Castle offers a distant view of the cathedral. The cathedral is the first Gothic cathedral of the Kingdom of Castile and one of the earliest Gothic churches in Spain. It features early Gothic architecture with the very rare Norman-Anglo-Norman Gothic style found in Spain. Over the following centuries, renovations and expansions incorporated Renaissance and Baroque elements. The first time we visited, it was closed. We had to catch a train and didn’t have time to explore in detail, so we only took a few photos at the entrance. Entrance to the cathedral requires a ticket. A notable feature of the cathedral is a set of wooden sculptures depicting the Last Supper, created around the 16th century. The wooden figures are highly expressive, vividly capturing the moment when Jesus predicts, “One of you will betray me.” Jesus is at the center with his hands spread and a calm expression, while the other apostles sit on either side, each with distinct postures and expressions. If you have the chance, it’s worth a close look.

Hiking Adventure in Spain's Central Plateau ~ Cuenca (Region) This circular route around the town of Uña in the Cuenca mountain range spans approximately 9 kilometers. We visited last summer, and it was one of the best experiences of the trip. You can park your car at the entrance of the town. The route is perfectly marked along the way, so you won’t get lost. Starting from the direction of 'El Escalerón,' the trail begins with a relatively pleasant climb. The rest of the route is generally smooth until you descend again through the 'La Raya' area, a narrow canyon nestled between rock walls that offers a unique landscape. Along the way, you’ll find several viewpoints where you can enjoy panoramic views of the town and its lakes. The trail boasts spectacular scenery, surrounded by vegetation and wildlife. We were lucky enough to spot vultures in flight. We visited during a summer weekday and didn’t encounter many people, except at the start of the route. If you want to fully enjoy the scenery, it’s recommended to bring water and snacks, as the entire hike takes about 3-4 hours.

The path is paved with stones, so make sure to wear good hiking shoes. A Journey Through Spain's Central Plateau ~ Cuenca (Region) After Alfonso VIII of Castile conquered Cuenca from Islamic rule in the 12th century, he built defensive structures on a hill overlooking the old town of Cuenca. These structures blend the typical Islamic and Christian architectural styles of medieval Spain. The city's castle has few remnants left; it was originally an Arab fortress located at the top of the city. Visitors can see two cubic buildings, remnants of the city walls, and the Bezudo Arch, which still bears a shield with wool. Most of the original structures have been destroyed, leaving only the walls and some defensive buildings.
