Years ago, I visited Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park in Washington State, which introduced me to the wonder of petrified wood. I learned then that the largest concentration of it in North America was in Arizona, and it’s been on my bucket list ever since. I originally planned to visit during my 2023 New Year’s trip to New Mexico, but a snowstorm shut down the highway, forcing me to cancel my hotel and skip the park. Fast forward to April 2025, I finally added it back to my Arizona itinerary, making the anticipation even stronger. 🪵 Why is it called "Petrified Wood"? The most incredible part is that these trees from over 200 million years ago have literally turned into stone. You can still see: · 🌳 The original shape of the trunks · 🪵 Growth rings · Wood grain · Sometimes even the finest bark details But the moment you touch it, you realize it’s a heavy, solid rock. The park is split into North and South sections; we spent two days exploring them. 🌈 The Highlight: Painted Desert The northern section features the famous Painted Desert. Interestingly, this is the only national park intersected by the historic Route 66. Near the vintage car display at the end of the north loop, you’ll see the park road passing over the highway—a unique sight reminiscent of the wildlife overpasses in Banff. On the second day, we explored the southern sites: 1. Blue Mesa ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A total must-see. The blue-gray, purple, and white badlands and wavy strata feel like a miniature version of another planet. 2. Crystal Forest ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A high concentration of petrified wood, perfect for getting a close-up look at the details. 3. Giant Logs ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Home to some truly massive petrified tree trunks. 4. Rainbow Forest Museum Great for learning about the fossilization process and seeing prehistoric exhibits.

Arrived to Chinle late in the afternoon and visited the canyon for a stunning sunset. Thunderbirdlodge was the perfect location to relax, just 5 min driving from the park entrance. So quiet!!

Trail free, no permit, but the summit is White Mountain Apache tribal land — non-tribal members must turn at the wilderness boundary (~11,200 ft), AZ-273 closes in winter, Springerville→Sheep Crossing 1h15. I based in Greer (cabin $130), drove AZ-273 to Sheep Crossing 07:00, hiked West Baldy to the saddle (7 mi, 2,000 ft). The moss on the wilderness register box was black-green with snowmelt, ate a $8 Springerville Navajo taco, watched cloud pour off Baldy's closed summit by 10:30 — turned at the boundary cairn, respectful, no trespass. Mistake: I pushed past the boundary cairn "just to see" — heard a ranger truck, retreated; the Apache boundary is enforced, fines real. Another: AZ-273 snowed shut Dec–Apr, no plow past Sunrise. Would you drive AZ-273 free + turn at the tribal boundary for the West Baldy mossy Apache-pine spruce climb, or skip Baldy and do the easier Mt Graham instead?

Prepare for strong UV rays by wearing a hat, sunglasses, breathable clothing, and comfortable hiking shoes. Since there are no restaurants within the park, bring water and snacks. Note that removing petrified wood is strictly prohibited by law, so refrain from touching or taking any. Nearby Holbrook City offers local Mexican cuisine such as tacos and burritos, as well as American barbecue. With its unique natural scenery, rare fossils, and vibrant desert landscapes, Petrified Forest National Park provides an extraordinary opportunity to experience Earth's history and create unforgettable memories.
