#2024wish I recently visited Yeak Laom Lake in Rattanakkiri Province, Cambodia, and let me tell you, it was such an exhilarating and joyful experience! Yeak Laom Lake, located 5 kilometres southeast of central Banlung, is a beautiful crater formed after a volcanic eruption over 4000 years ago. The lake has a diameter of 800 meters and 50 meters of clear water. Tourists can view the lake from two wooden platforms or take a dip. A path surrounds the lake, providing a leisurely track for trekking. A small visitor centre exhibits and sells local handicrafts. The lake is home to wild pigs, rare birds, and butterflies. The Cambodian term "Yeak Laom" means "giants" and "surroundings." The legend of the lake tells of a powerful giant king who had a beautiful daughter named 'Neang Sak Kra Oob'. The couple fled into a deep forest, fearing the king would discover their secret love. The king's troops searched for her but couldn't find her. The giant hold dug by the troops left a deep pond in the Ratanak Kiri area, which is why the locals call this site "Yeak Laom Pond." Another ancient folktale suggests that the name "Yeak Loam" is a respectful reminder of the sacred and spiritual nature of the ancient leader who once ruled the local minority people in happiness and harmony.
