Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju is a treasured cultural heritage of South Korea, representing the splendid Buddhist culture and architectural artistry of the Unified Silla period. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the slopes of Tohamsan Mountain in Jinhyeon-dong, Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, Bulguksa Temple serves as the head temple of the 11th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Together with Seokguram Grotto, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The name 'Bulguksa' translates to 'Temple of the Buddha Land,' embodying the Silla people's aspiration to create an ideal Buddhist utopia on earth. At the temple's main hall, Daeungjeon, the Sakyamuni Buddha is enshrined at the center, flanked by the Bodhisattvas Jehwagalra and Maitreya. In front of the hall stand two iconic pagodas: Seokgatap and Dabotap. • Seokgatap: A simple and well-balanced three-story stone pagoda, where the world's oldest woodblock-printed text, the "Mugujeonggwang Daedaranigyeong," was discovered during restoration in 1966. • Dabotap: A masterpiece with a complex and intricate design, showcasing the beauty of wooden architecture in stone form. Admission: As of May 4, 2023, entry is free, with only parking fees applicable. • Visiting hours: Open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. • Parking fees: 1,000 KRW for small and medium vehicles, 2,000 KRW for large vehicles. • Best visiting seasons: Spring for cherry blossoms and autumn for colorful foliage, perfect for photography and leisurely strolls.
