Wat Phra Si Sanphet

🕍 Background & Significance • Established in 1448 AD (1991 BE) by King Ramathibodi II on the grounds of the old royal palace, later becoming the royal temple exclusively for the monarchy. • Considered the most important temple of the Ayutthaya royal court, it was not a residence for monks but was used for royal ceremonies and oaths. • Served as the architectural inspiration for Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok. 🏛️ Architectural Highlights • Features three large stupas (in Sri Lankan style) housing the ashes of three kings: King Borommatrailokkanat, King Ramathibodi II, and the succeeding monarch, reflecting the tradition of royal cremation. • Once housed a massive golden Buddha statue, 16 meters tall and weighing approximately 343 kg. After the fall of Ayutthaya, the statue was melted down for its gold, leaving only the base. • The architecture showcases a blend of European-Indo-Persian sophistication in "Prasat Phra Narai" and traditional religious structures. 🔥 Destruction & Restoration • During the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767 AD (2310 BE), the Burmese burned the temple and melted the golden Buddha statue.
