Facades that reflect details and urban context

One of the most striking features of the exterior of the Seoul Museum of Craft Art is the repetitive patterns of windows and wall finishes. In Exhibition Hall 1 and Exhibition Hall 3, the windows corresponding to each classroom are arranged at equal intervals and in identical proportions, recreating the familiar appearance of school buildings. Particularly in Exhibition Hall 3, the rough texture and repetitive patterns of precast concrete panels bring vitality to the entire exterior wall, evoking a sense of the building's history. The exterior of the Education Hall incorporates terracotta louvers, adding warmth and enhancing the sense of color. Meanwhile, the Information Hall uses materials like glass and metal to create transparency and lightness, serving as visual connectors that link the courtyard and urban streets to the museum's interior. Some sections of the exterior walls are composed of a mix of bricks and stones, recreating the sentiment of old school buildings and the texture of lined walls or bricks. The color choices also reference old paint colors and the hues of existing stones and bricks, achieving a natural and unobtrusive color combination. The museum harmonizes with the surrounding landscapes of Insadong and Bukchon Hanok Village by maintaining low walls, open courtyards, and modest building scales. Thanks to this meticulous exterior design, the Seoul Museum of Craft Art retains its sense of memory and place within the city, transforming into a public space that feels familiar and welcoming to citizens.
