An Underrated Millennium-Old Cultural Treasure

Fengqiao Grand Temple was originally built in the Southern Song Dynasty and rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty. Its original name was Ziwei Hou Temple, constructed to honor Yang Yan, a boatman officially recognized by the Ming Dynasty. The entire structure faces south with a north-south axis, featuring an entrance hall, opera stage, central hall, and rear hall in sequence, flanked by side rooms, bell and drum towers, showcasing grand scale and exquisite layout. Must-See Highlights: • Ancient Opera Stage: Comparable to the "No.1 Ancient Opera Stage in Zhejiang," the gray clay sculptures of dragons, phoenixes, and theatrical characters on the roof ridge are lifelike. The top’s caisson ceiling is exquisitely crafted, with dome brackets and beam carvings demonstrating superb craftsmanship that leaves visitors in awe. • Historical Relics: On March 31, 1939, Premier Zhou Enlai delivered an anti-Japanese salvation speech to people from all walks of life on this opera stage, giving the temple special historical significance. Standing on the stage, one can almost feel the passion and fervor of that era. • Central Hall Plaques: The central hall preserves many plaques from famous artists and celebrities, including "Benefit the People," written by Weng Tonghe, tutor to Emperor Guangxu.
