Another small town closely connected to Columbus
Andalucia Tour ~ Huelva (Region)
Moguer is a town in the La Tirara region, on the banks of the Tinto River, a place deeply involved in the discovery of America, since it was in the Monastery of Santa Clara that Christopher Columbus took his oath of allegiance.
The town is the birthplace of poet and Nobel Prize winner Juan Ramón Jiménez, whose former home has been converted into a museum. It also preserves many interesting monuments, such as the castle fortress, which was originally a Roman villa and later transformed into a farm by the Arabs. The city center was built around this fort. From the perspective of ancient buildings, only two large towers and part of the city wall remain. We must also point out the Gothic-Mudéjar Monastery of Santa Clara, declared a National Monument in 1931, and the Monastery of San Francisco, founded in the 15th century and rebuilt after the Lisbon earthquake.
