Raffles Lighthouse @Pulau Satumu
Courtesy to MPA which organised this truly remarkable trip to see the 2nd oldest lighthouse in Singapore. “The Raffles Lighthouse was first mooted in 1833, but the foundation stone was only laid in 1854 when William John Butterworth was the Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1843 to 1855” source Wikipedia. The rotating beacon, produces 117,000 candelas with a nominal range of 20 nautical miles. To reach the island (about 14 km south of Singapore) takes about 75 mins on a boat travelling about 10 knots. Too bad we could not climb up the tower due to safety and security reasons as well as time limitations.

Why is Singapore's "Restricted" Island So Popular? 🏝️🔒
#summervacay
You might wonder why a lesser-known Singaporean island, with its limited visitor slots, controlled access, and even photography restrictions, is so sought after. But having experienced it, I can tell you it's absolutely worth the effort!
This mysterious island, which includes Pulau Satumu (home to the lighthouse and a military zone with some restricted, no-photography areas), offers a unique and surprisingly rewarding experience.
What Makes It Worth the "Hassle"?
Exclusivity and Serenity: The strict visitor limits mean you're not jostling with crowds. This creates a rare sense of peace and intimacy with nature, a stark contrast to Singapore's bustling main island.
Pristine Natural Beauty: With fewer visitors, the island's natural environment remains exceptionally well-preserved. Think untouched beaches, clear waters, and thriving marine life. This is a chance to see a side of Singapore's natural landscape that few get to experience.
Unique History and Mystery: The very restrictions and military presence add an intriguing layer of mystery and history to the visit. It's not just a pretty island; it's a place with stories and a unique role in Singapore's past and present.
A True Escape: For those looking to genuinely disconnect and experience something different, the enforced limits on modern distractions (like constant photo-taking in some areas) push you to be more present and truly immerse yourself in the environment.
While securing a spot might require some planning and quick action, the reward is an unparalleled sense of discovery and a truly exclusive encounter with one of Singapore's hidden natural gems.
