Bandipur, Nepal: A Forgotten Town
Bandipur is a quaint little town hidden in the mountains of Nepal, known for its tranquil atmosphere, well-preserved Newari culture, and stunning views of the Himalayan snow-capped mountains.
⛺ Bandipur is located between Kathmandu and Pokhara, closer to Pokhara. From Pokhara, drive east to near Dumre, then turn right uphill for about 7 km to reach Bandipur. Currently, Nepal is constructing a cable car that will run directly from the foot of the mountain to Bandipur, which will make transportation more convenient in the future, but may also affect the town's original tranquility.
🛬 Bandipur was an important trading hub during the Nepali Malla Dynasty in the 17th century, connecting Tibet and the North Indian plains. However, after the opening of the Prithvi Highway in the 1960s, the town gradually declined, but this also helped preserve its authentic traditional Nepali style. Most of the buildings in the town are 18th-century Newari style, with red brick structures and carved wooden windows, full of medieval charm.
🏨 Most of the accommodations in the town are homestays converted from old Newari houses, such as the famous "Old Inn." Although the price is relatively high (about USD 100/night), they are very distinctive. However, the facilities in some guesthouses are quite basic, such as low water pressure and unstable electricity.
🏔️**Slow-paced life experience**: Bandipur does not have overly commercialized tourist souvenir shops, but instead attracts visitors with its laid-back lifestyle. In the early morning, you can enjoy the sunrise over the snow-capped mountains from Tundikhel, the ancient parade ground. At noon, take a nap under the fig trees, and in the evening, admire the sunset glow.
**Snow mountain viewing**: The viewing platform on the east side of the town is an excellent place to enjoy the sunrise over the Himalayas, and the roof of the abandoned hotel offers unobstructed views of the snow-capped mountains.
- **Local culture**: The residents are mainly Newari people, with a traditional and peaceful lifestyle. Visitors can experience the simple folk customs and strong religious atmosphere.
🧡**Suitable for**: Travelers who enjoy slow travel, cultural exploration, and natural scenery.
- **Things to note**: Due to the high altitude (about 1200m), there is a large temperature difference between day and night, so warm clothing is necessary.
Bandipur is known as the "Snow Mountain Town" and is a rare, undeveloped paradise in Nepal, suitable for travelers seeking inner peace and natural beauty.
