The beginnings of the Sinaia Monastery, an Orthodox Christian place of worship, around which the town of Sinaia was formed, were at the end of the 17th century. Its founder, Spătarul Mihail Cantacuzino, named it Sinaia after the name of St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai - Egypt.
