#weekendgetaways First Trip of the year! In the spirit of last year’s 11.11 i sorta impulsively booked a solo trip in Penang, Malaysia. As a first solo trip, i chose a destination close to singapore, with a flying time of 1 hr and 15 mins. it is pretty close. One of my stop is the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, which is a well preserved mansion that houses artifacts, antiques and architecture of the old times. The details ate very intricate, a true craft of an artisan of the past. I visited early in the morning, just as they open at around 9:30am, and the people haven’t flowed in yet. #Penang #Georgetown #Malaysia

#localescapes The Pinang Peranakan Mansion is the masterpiece of the heritage building featuring the design and facade of the Peranakans, also known as Baba Nyonya or the Straits Chinese who mainly settled in the Straits settlements during the 19th centuries. Built in Year 1893 by Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee, this mansion has all the designs from the West, Chinese and Malay. It showcases all the characteristics of the Peranakans, such as the long table (Tok Panjang), the sky well in the middle for capturing sunlight, the chambers for the young masters and childrens, kitchens and also showcases a huge collections of old wares like the plates and the bowls, as well as jeweleries. This mansion was also used as a film site for drama and series such as Crazy Rich Asians, The Little Nyonya etc. This is indeed the most well preserved Peranakan relic till date.

The Peranakan Mansion in Penang used to be a residence of a tin-mining tycoon and was later purchased by the current owner, who also happens to be an art collector, and converted into a museum to display some of his collections and also share Penang’s Peranakan heritage. We took a tour here, which lasted almost two hours, and our guide was very animated, sharing stories of Penang as well as the former and current owner and the history of the building itself. Getting There -The mansion is located along Lebuh Gereja (Church Street) on the outskirts of Little India and just a short walk away from the Esplanade (Kota Lama) and Fort Cornwallis. Address :29, Church Street, 10200 Penang, Malaysia I would suggest you visit those places first if you are on a walking tour of the old town, then when the heat of the day starts to become uncomfortable, head to the mansion, where you can escape the sun and cool down in the large, airy rooms. #artshunting Entrance fee is affordable at RM20 per adult and totally worth the price. We visited at 10am during a public holiday. The mansion is so large that it is hardly noticeable from the outside. Everything is well maintained and beautiful. In addition, there are many antiques that are meticulously displayed. Excellent example of a typical rich merchants home - full of antiques & access to so many rooms. There are English speaking guides and also mandarin tour at certain times of the day and they are very informative. I enjoyed the central courtyard and the different tiles throughout the premises, as well as the ancestral hall and the paintings. I really appreciate the effort of the current owner to preserve this historical and cultural heritage, and presented to the public. I’m still in awe of how rich the Peranakan culture is. The museum itself is housed within a distinctive green-hued mansion at Church Street, George Town, which once served as the residence and office of a 19th-century Chinese tycoon, Chung Keng Quee.

a prominent community of acculturated Chinese unique to this part of the world, especially in the Straits Settlements (Penang, Malacca and Singapore) hence its other name, the Straits Chinese. Adopting selected ways of the local Malays and later, the colonial British, the Peranakans had created a unique lifestyle and customs which had not only left behind a rich legacy of antiques but its cultural influences like cuisine and language are still evident in Penang today. At the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, the typical home of a rich Baba of a century ago is recreated to offer a glimpse of their opulent lifestyle and of their many customs and traditions. With over 1,000 pieces of antiques and collectibles of the era on display, this Baba-Nyonya museum is also housed in one of Penang’s heritage mansion of eclectic design and architecture. Built at the end of the 19th century by one of local history’s famous personalities, the ‘Hai Kee Chan’ or Sea Remembrance Store had once served as the residence and office of Kapitan Cina Chung Keng Kwee. Though not a Baba himself, his Chinese courtyard house was much like a typical large Baba home of eclectic style, incorporating Chinese carved-wood panels and English floor tiles and Scottish ironworks. Having survived the many decades of neglect and decay, the mansion has now been restored to its former glory of a stately home.
