The Heroes' Square is the outer square of the Hofburg Palace, built during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I and is part of the so-called "Imperial Square" that was not fully built. The statue of Grand Duke Carl and Prince Eugen stands at both ends of the line. To the northeast of the square is the Hoffburg Palace, to the southeast is the New Hoffburg, and to the south-west the inner ring road, which is separated from the "outside the city gate" (Aeusseress Burgtor).
