The annual Harbin Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is held in two locations, with Sun Island Scenic Area being the second largest. It is now used year-round as Harbin's primary parks and recreation area. About 3,800 hectares (14 square miles) in area, the island is located in the Songhua River. It has bridges leading to smaller islands. There are other attractions on the island all year round, but it is most known as the showcase and competition location for the snow sculptures of the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. The island hosts numerous square kilometres of enormous snow sculptures during the winter. The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, also known as the Harbin Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo, uses it as the location for its snow sculpture exhibition. These 3-D pictures are enormous. To maintain their shape and support weight, the snow sculptures are built from compacted snow. They are extremely intricate and have won awards. These are best viewed in the daytime, unlike the more well-known ice sculptures, which are not illuminated at night. The whole afternoon's itinerary doesn't require much queuing, the cable car to Sun Island has a lot more queues than the return trip, it is recommended to take the subway to go and the cable car to return.

It was an exciting journey with family to the Expo. Hd a fun time though it was chilly and freezing cold (-15 c) especially with two small kids we had to be very careful and often check on them. My lil baby daughter (1.5 years old) also enjoyed walking and playing in snow along with her brother (4 years old). Seeing the massive snow sculptures and taking snowy slides. Tuck shops kept us warm when we needed a break. Fun rides (icy slide, horse riding, dog sledging, motor car pull, snow bike ) at the entrance of expo. You have to buy separate ticket for these rides. If you are not into them icy slides, snow cycles and other rides are available in expo all inclusive in the ticket ( for free).You can reach the island through taxi or take subway train to get there without any hassle.

had the time of my life in Harbin! if you like snow, Harbin sun island and ice and snow world are the places to go. a little tip for foreigners. when visiting the ice and snow world, if you wanna skip lines to the big slide and the wheel, walk up to the staff and tell them you can't register on the app, they will let yo5in right away 😉 do the sun island in the morning then go to tye ice and snow world. as for Saint Sophie's cathedral, I had to see it in the day and the night. outstanding!#harbin #church
