Kitano still has the Ijinkan (Western-style building where foreigners live) left over from the Meiji era. With the opening of Kobe Port in 1968, Ijinkan gradually increased, making Kitano Ijinkan Street full of exotic flavors. There are now 20 or 30 Ijinkans open to the public.
