Although the Pope is, of course, most associated with St. Peter's, Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano (Basilica of St. John Lateran) is the official cathedral of the Pope, in his role as Bishop of Rome. This Baroque basilica incredible and is definitely worth a visit, perhaps not on your first trip to Rome, but on another visit. It is filled with relics, an ancient baptistry, a beautiful cloister dating back to the 13th century and large, detailed sculptures of each of the 12 apostles. The central bronze doors are originals from the Senate House in the Imperial Forum. The High Altar is used only by the Pope. Note: You are required to cover shoulders and knees when visiting here. Admission is free. The San Giovanni metro stop is near the basilica.
