Hiking through Cangyan Mountain, this is the actual filming location for 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'
I first learned about Cangyan Mountain from the ending of Ang Lee's movie 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', where the rebellious Yu Jiaolong leaps from the bridge into the misty abyss. Although the place in the movie is Wudang Mountain, the actual filming location is Cangyan Mountain in Hebei, 800 kilometers away.
·
It takes over 2 hours to drive from Shijiazhuang, following the grand and robust Taihang Mountains and Gantao River. It must be said that Hebei is really low-key, such a treasure of a scenic spot, even during the National Day holiday, is not too crowded.
·
The Cangyan Mountain scenic area is actually based on the ancient temple of Fuqing Temple, which has a history of over 1400 years. The main structure is the Princess Nanyang Shrine, including the Zen rooms, ancient temples, pavilions, and steles built along the mountain, most of which are relics from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
·
When we went, the Cangyan Mountain cable car was not open, and we hiked the whole way, taking a big loop. The intensity was not too great, some sections were steep, but the journey was not long.
🎒Route: Mountain Gate - Wanshian Hall - Qiaolou Hall - Guandi Temple - Princess Shrine - Princess Tomb - Bodhisattva Peak - Jade Emperor Peak - East Heaven Gate - Mountain Gate.
⏰Time: 3 hours+

✅Wanshian Hall: Built during the Ming dynasty, it is a Buddhist hall that integrates Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. According to the stele, it was once part of a palace complex. It was under renovation when we visited, so it was of average interest, but there were several old steles in the stele pavilion in front, and we unexpectedly found a damaged provincial protected stele.
✅Qiaolou Hall: The crowning touch of Fuqing Temple and the soul of Cangyan Mountain, it is known as one of China's three major hanging temples. The stone bridge part of Qiaolou Hall is said to be built during the Sui dynasty, slightly earlier than the Zhaozhou Bridge. The main hall was rebuilt during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty, a two-story double-eaved pavilion-style building with a golden glazed tile roof and vermilion columns spanning between two steep cliffs, each displaying splendor.
✅Guandi Temple: Here, leaning against the railing and looking back at Qiaolou Hall offers a better view, allowing you to capture the waterfall below and the steep peaks. If you want to take photos with people, you can go to the nearby Fa Wei Platform, climb up to a small platform that is great for group photos.
✅Princess Shrine: The main hall of Fuqing Temple, built on the edge of a cliff, is said to have been the residence of Princess Nanyang. The shrine is three bays wide and one bay deep, with a single-eaved Xieshan-style yellow-green glazed roof. Inside the shrine, in the middle of the three niches, sits a colored sculpture of Princess Nanyang, with four standing musicians on each side, each with a different expression, lifelike, probably all original sculptures. In addition, the murals about the story of Princess Nanyang inside the shrine are also worth seeing. Next to the shrine is a sutra pagoda, which does not appear to be earlier than the Jin dynasty.
✅Princess Tomb: Commonly known as 'Three Empress Dowager' among the locals, it is said that Princess Nanyang passed away here. The main structures have been rebuilt in recent years, and unexpectedly, this tomb even has an underground palace, with a slightly eerie atmosphere, startled by the covered statues inside.
✅Bodhisattva Peak: Built during the Ming dynasty, what we see today has been rebuilt in recent years. It is the largest temple complex in Cangyan Mountain, but that's about it. Inside, there's even a nonsensical female corpse exhibition. From the cliffs outside Bodhisattva Peak, you can overlook the Qiaolou Hall area, where three single-arch stone bridges are embedded like flying rainbows between the steep cliffs on both sides, a magnificent sight.
✅Jade Emperor Peak: Built during the Ming dynasty, all have been rebuilt in recent years, can be skipped if time is short.
✅East Heaven Gate: This is the position directly opposite Qiaolou Hall, where you can photograph the relationship between Qiaolou Hall and the surrounding mountains, but a telephoto lens is needed.

In the off-season, I feel like going to Cangyan Mountain. Two people will stop the car and pay 5 yuan for parking. I thought it was a large parking lot. In the end, I could only park next to the construction sand stone and a large slope. I don't know if it is a regular scenic spot. Because it was winter, just in time for construction, the cable car was out of service, and after entering the mountain, there were long wooden boards on the steps. When you arrive at the cliff building, some buildings are covered with green cloth for maintenance. When you have the opportunity, you must go to a good browsing in summer.
The visitor hall is being renovated. I can't drive to the door to park when I am late. I can only take a free shuttle bus and take 5 minutes. The newly built cable car is not open yet. The hanging temple inside is the most classic. I have photographed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Journey to the West. The whole journey is not too tired, the play time is about 3-4 hours.
The environment is beautiful, the humanistic atmosphere is strong, the history is long, the overall feeling is very good, the most important thing is to punch the west travel notes, it is amazing. It's really a natural oxygen bar here, great. I will come again when I have time.
