Tashkurgan Town is located in the county seat of Tajik Autonomous County, in the plain area on the west bank of Tashkurgan River. The town has a long history. Since the Western Han Dynasty, it has been the seat of military and political organs. It is the throat of the ancient Silk Road, an important frontier town, and an important hub to neighboring Pakistan. At present, the town is the seat of the Tashkorgan County Party Committee and the County People's Government of the Communist Party of China. It is the core of the county's politics, economy, culture and transportation, as well as a distribution center for commodities.
