This is well worth the short drive from Kyoto...there are several beautifully unique temples located down lovely garden paths...the countryside is spectacular!
The gardens at Shorinin were truly outstanding. Not as busy as other sites in Kyoto, the water features, dry garden and garden at Shorinin were among our favorites.
It is a temple of the Tendai sect built on the north side of Sansenin, and is an old temple that prospered as a dojo for the Ohara statement. It is a temple with a history that was built between the early and mid Heian periods and was conducted by Honen Shonin of the Jodo sect and Ohara questions and answers of other sects. If you go straight north on the approach to Sansenin, you will see it in front of you. Since I visited during heavy snow, it was thickly snowing all over the small precincts, and the main hall and bell tower were thickly covered with snow, giving it a majestic appearance.
