GGuest UserUpon arrival, check-in at reception was smooth. We were provided with our room key and directed to our accommodation, which required us to drive to the other side of the estate. However, when we reached the room, the key did not work. We walked back to reception, where we were informed that a network issue had prevented the key from being properly programmed. The receptionist, who was very helpful, offered to accompany us to the room and opened it using a master key. She assured us that a functioning key would be delivered as soon as the network was restored.
Upon entering the room, we immediately noticed that it had not been cleaned. The window sill was sticky with what appeared to be beverage spills, the floor was dirty, the bathroom mats were not fresh, and most concerning, there were rat droppings on the window sill, on the floor behind the curtains, and behind the door. I contacted reception to request housekeeping and asked to speak with a manager, as the condition of the room was unacceptable. A housekeeping staff member arrived, but I requested that cleaning not proceed until the housekeeping manager assessed the situation. The manager quickly confirmed that the room had indeed not been cleaned and that there were clear signs of rodent activity. She apologised sincerely, asked us to wait while the room was cleaned, and said she would escalate the matter to the rooms division. While waiting on the terrace outside, we noticed a mouse in the bushes, which explained the droppings found inside.
After the room was cleaned, the manager returned, apologised again, and informed us that a complimentary bottle of wine had been arranged for us. We told her about the mouse we had seen and expressed that we did not feel comfortable staying in that room. She went back to speak with the rooms division, and we waited in the bar. An hour later, she returned with keys to a new room and directed us there. The replacement room was clean, though the entire experience made for a rocky start to our stay.
The following day, after breakfast, we returned to our room to find that the terrace doors had been removed and two maintenance staff were working. This came as an unexpected surprise, as no one had informed us that repairs would be taking place. We decided to return to the bar to allow the work to be completed. As we were celebrating a birthday that day, the housekeeping manager kindly arranged for our room to be decorated with a birthday message.
From that point onward, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay thanks to the exceptional customer service at the restaurants, bars, and spa. In particular, we would like to recognise Moses, Regal, and Tebogo at Kingsley Restaurant; Sibongile at Granatas; and Mandy at the spa for their outstanding hospitality. They truly made our stay memorable.
Overall, despite the challenges we experienced upon arrival, we had a lovely stay. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making my mother’s birthday special.

I really enjoyed my stay at Protea Hotel by Marriott O.R. Tambo Airport. If you need somewhere to stay before or after a flight from O.R. Tambo, the location is incredibly convenient — the hotel is only about 3.5 km from the airport and provides a complimentary airport shuttle, which makes travelling so much easier.
The first thing that stood out to me was the aviation theme. It’s carried throughout the hotel, from the aeroplane-inspired artwork to the industrial-style furniture and décor. Even my room continued the theme, which gave it so much more character than a typical airport hotel.
My room was clean, modern and comfortable, with a very comfortable bed, TV, tea and coffee facilities and a small fridge. I also really liked the rainfall shower and the overall open, contemporary bathroom design. The hotel’s rooms are soundproofed too, which is definitely appreciated considering how close you are to the airport.
The hotel also has an outdoor swimming pool, a 24-hour gym and an on-site restaurant called The Warehouse, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Room service is available as well, so you really don’t need to leave the property if you’re only there for a short stopover.
What I liked most was that it actually feels like an airport hotel in the best possible way. ✈️ The aeroplane photographs, aviation-style furniture and little design details make the property interesting and memorable rather than just somewhere convenient to sleep.
Overall, I would definitely recommend Protea Hotel O.R. Tambo Airport for layovers, early-morning flights, late arrivals or even an overnight stay between connecting flights. Comfortable, clean, convenient and literally minutes away from the airport.

MMahoney_zhWe booked this hotel for one night, and it was only a 5-7 minute taxi ride from the airport. The rooms are quite spacious, and the bathroom has both a shower and a bathtub. I would have liked more electrical outlets. A hairdryer can be requested at reception. There's some crockery available, but we couldn't use the frying pan as it was in poor condition. You can also order food from a menu at the hotel. There's a Spar supermarket about 1 km away, and a McDonald's nearby (though the staff strongly advised taking a taxi to the store as the area isn't very safe). The hotel grounds themselves are very well-secured.

I found the hotel’s facilities impressively comprehensive, and the service consistently top-notch. The breakfast selection was amazing, and I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly and outgoing the staff were—always ready with a smile 😊. My room was exceptionally comfortable and clean, adding to the overall positive experience.
For those looking to make the most out of their stay, the hotel has a really nice bar with unique drinks and regularly updated menus, which is great for relaxing after a long journey. The 24/7 room service is a real bonus, as is dinner and buffet service till about 2am—perfect for late arrivals!
A practical tip for travelers: Be mindful when using the shuttle bus from the airport. The pick-up point is at the bus terminal beside the Intercontinental Hotel. When approached by someone asking if you're looking for the Southern Sun shuttle, be courteous but know they may expect a tip, so it’s wise to have some small cash handy. In my experience, the driver was reluctant to hand over my luggage until tipped—a small but important detail!
Overall, I’d recommend this hotel to friends and business travelers alike, and my trust in Trip.com's listings has grown thanks to this experience. The rooms are modern, stylish, and impeccably clean, with comfortable beds and thoughtful amenities that made it easy to relax after a long day. The attention to detail throughout the hotel is impressive, creating a luxurious yet comfortable atmosphere.
One of the biggest highlights is the hotel’s excellent location. It’s conveniently situated close to Sandton City, Nelson Mandela Square, and the Gautrain, making it an ideal choice for both business and leisure travellers.
The breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of fresh, delicious options, and every meal I had at the restaurant was of excellent quality. The facilities, including the gym, pool, and spa, are well maintained and add tremendous value to the overall experience.
What truly sets The Catalyst apart is the exceptional customer service. Every member of staff went above and beyond to ensure my stay was enjoyable, always greeting guests with a smile and a willingness to help.
If you’re looking for a modern, comfortable, and well-located hotel in Johannesburg, I highly recommend The Catalyst Hotel. It offers outstanding value for money and delivers a level of hospitality that makes you want to return. I will definitely be staying here again on my next visit to Sandton.

GGuest UserChecked in and had to wait for an hour for electricity no updates provided my room was near the power room so I could hear doors opening and closing and the electricity physically clicking and tripping. On and off on and off. When I settled into bed with light off, I received a knock at the door by guest asking me to open the gate for them as they did not receive a gate key. I a single female then had to get up put on clothes and go outside to let their guest out. I got over the lights shining into room and gaps in front door leading to courtyard with a blind that was blowing forward and basically showing me inside in any state. The electricity issue was happening consistently and could hear them walking in and out constantly. Wednesday I had a big presentation and got up at 05:30 to no electricity or update. I had to call them for information and was offered a flash light. I did my presentation with my hair undone due to not being able to use my hair machine. The owner found me in the smoking section and apologised worried he would be receiving a 1 star. I told him I wouldnt as I am in the service industry and him apologising is good enough. However I was further disappointed by more electricity issues and no update. I had to get ready with front door open and all blinds open to do my hair and makeup. Guests were walking past requesting updates, we had to reach out to them. No information provided. Shocking.

GGuest UserThe excellent location and room facilities are expected of a 4 star hotel. Reception has been accommodating for early check in too. The only aspect we do not like is the design of the shower with not much privacy as you can see through the glass, when someone is showering. No screen for the shower causing wet floor outside the shower.
