He is currently writing a study of opera and international law from the Medici to the Met. He held his first academic post in Dublin, before moving to Queen Mary University of London, where he became Professor in the School of History in 2012. He was elected to the Chair in the History of Political Thought at Cambridge in 2018. In 2022 he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Arts by University College Dublin. He previously co-directed the AHRC-funded project on Popular Sovereignty in Historical Perspective as well as the History in the Humanities and Social Sciences Network, also funded by the AHRC. His work has attracted various accolades and awards, including as joint winner of the István Hont Memorial Book Prize in Intellectual History in 2016. His books include the award-winning studies Armed Struggle: The History of the IRA (2003) and Irish Freedom: The History of Nationalism in Ireland (2006). His most recent books are Does Counter-Terrorism Work? (2024), Does Terrorism Work? A History (2016), The Cambridge History of Terrorism (edited, 2021), and The Oxford Handbook of Terrorism (co-edited, 2019). She is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and of the Higher Education Academy. Join photographer Polly Garnett to discuss the images and scenes presented in ‘Hill Pictures’ - a large scale outdoor exhibition of the Belfast Hills. Tour is outdoors and lasts approximately 1 hour. About the Artist and Exhibition: The Belfast Hills, consisting of Slievenacloy, Colin Glen, Divis and the Black Mountain, Ligoniel, Cave Hill and Carnmoney Hill, are iconic features of the city’s wider landscape shaping the skyline and playing a central role in community identities. ‘Hill Pictures’ documents the long-term conservation of the hills and our interaction with them. Collaborating with the Belfast Hills Partnership and the National Trust, Polly Garnett led five photographic workshops on Divis, Black Mountain and Cave Hill. Polly is a Belfast-based photographer, community artist, and educator. She works on long-term projects and commissions with a socially engaged and participatory approach, using photography as a tool for dialogue and creative expression. Alongside her freelance work, she facilitates arts and environmental education projects, encouraging children and young people to connect with their landscapes and histories in new ways. Chad’s exploration delves into the cultural and environmental significance of bogs, examining the personal, economical and mythical relationships between people and the land. Through this body of work, he highlights the complexities between destructive effects of industrial practices, such as drainage, extraction, afforestation, and unregulated burning, that can harm these fragile ecosystems, contributing to a warming climate. She will introduce you to the effects that different sounds may have on the body during a sound-based relaxation experience. In a group session, each person will have their own individual experience of the sounds. For some this is felt physically, for others it works on an emotional or mental level.
