Lecture and Launch , The Irish High Cross- Origins, Revival and Replicas | Public Record Office of Northern Ireland
Jun 13, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Belfast
This lecture will explore the origins and chronological development of the High Cross and its later revivals. This lecture celebrates European Archaeology Days (EAD) and mark the official launch of the
Stories in Stone
Exhibition.
Irish High Crosses are some of the most iconic and evocative of our ancient monuments. They are highly decorated masterpieces of Early Medieval sculpture in stone. During the 19th century in Ireland the ancient High Cross captured the attention of artists and sculptors of the “Celtic Revival”, most notably Henry O’Neill. The revival of interest in these monuments led to replica High Crosses being cast and displayed at exhibitions across the globe. Monumental sculptors, inspired by these replicas, made grave markers in the style of High Crosses, changing the skylines of Irish graveyards in the process. In 2024 a full-scale replica of the 10th century Donaghmore Cross was manufactured to mark and celebrate the co-location of HERoNI and PRONI, at the Titanic Quarter, Belfast, where the cross is on display in the atrium.
Bio:
Bronagh Murray is Project Officer for Archaeology 2030: A strategic approach for Northern Ireland, she is an archaeologist within Heritage Records and Designations Branch, Historic Environment Division. Bronagh’s specialist research area is in Iron Age and Early Medieval sculpture. She has worked on numerous excavations throughout Northern Ireland from prehistoric settlements to 19th century vernacular dwellings.

Reading Seamus Heaney: The Spirit Level | The Seamus Heaney Centre
Jun 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Belfast
Doors and Drinks: 5:30pm
Start time: 6:00pm Reading Seamus Heaney is a new series of public talks and group discussions that will look at the twelve main poetry collections published by Seamus Heaney between 1966 and 2010. Beginning with Death of a Naturalist from 1966, we will read one book of poems on the third Thursday of each month, guided by Seamus Heaney Centre staff, visiting writers and other guests.
By looking at entire poetry collections, participants will gain an appreciation of how Heaney’s poetic technique developed in response to the world around him: the world of his family and friends, his literary influences and the turbulent social and political context for his writing. The Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s holds a unique archive of broadcast materials, both television and radio, relating to the poet’s life and work. These recordings will be used to illuminate the discussions and provide context for the work we will be reading. Special Collections holds a wide range of notebooks and manuscripts, which will also play a role in our discussions of poetic development and writing technique.
With no specialist knowledge of poetry required, you can expect to acquire an understanding of Heaney’s idea that he wanted to ‘take the English lyric and make it eat stuff that it has never eaten before.’

Beirut Groove Collective | Ulster Sports Club
Jun 20, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Belfast
The Beirut Groove Collective is a London-based collective of vinyl DJs, crate diggers, music obsessives and artists. For over 15 years, the BGC has thrown its cult clubnight, the BGC All-Nighter in Beirut and now London, showcasing obscure and underground clubbing records from the 1960s to the early 1980s from the Middle East, Africa and around the world. The clubnight has built an international reputation for its distinctive sound and attracted some of the world's leading DJs, turntabalists, crate diggers and record collectors. The collective plays an eclectic mix of Lebanese ‘60s Garage and Beat, Bellydance Psych, Arabic Disco, Latin Tarab, Armenian estradayin, Ethiopian and Sudanese Jazz, Rare Soul and Funk, Psychedelia and much more.
The New York Times included the BGC clubnights in their list of the "Top 15" parties around the world, and they've been featured everywhere from The Guardian and Monocle Magazine to ARTE, the BBC, Time Out London and Vice Magazine.
Starting as an underground funk and soul party in the living room of community space Zico House in Beirut, the party soon evolved into its present day strictly-vinyl format, expanding musically to showcase some of the pioneering records and diverse music scenes that came out of Beirut – a cosmopolitan hub for music – and the wider region in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Over the years, the collective has helped shape Lebanon’s alternative clubbing culture, throwing regular parties in basement clubs, abandoned beachside villas and warehouse spaces in the forgotten fringes of Beirut. Six years ago, the BGC evolved into a weekly clubnight in Beirut and in 2021, the collective brought their clubnights to London with monthly residencies in grassroots venues across the city, as well as guest appearances at festivals, clubs and community spaces around the world.
