A classy gem in the heart of the Lake District, everything about this hotel is beautiful and good quality, from the rooms, amenities and menu. I highly recommend staying here. The tasting menu is delicious. The staff were really friendly and accommodating.

Lovely hotel, rooms amazing, breakfast one of the best. Breakfast staff very friendly and attentive, location perfect. Sadly the evening was a disappointment, we had to ask 3 time a for the “All day dining” menu, we were left for 45 mins with nobody attending to us, we felt very uncomfortable, left comments with no reply, our summary is that the hotel doesn’t want casual dining on an evening, we went and got an amazing pizza from up the road

This was our first visit but certainly won’t be our last as we just loved everything about the place – a perfect size, tastefully decorated throughout, with a great restaurant and wonderful staff. The hotel is ideally located as it’s close to the centre of Ambleside and also the starting point for a number of local walks. In addition, we appreciated the restaurant offering both a tasting menu and an a la carte – too many places are now “tasting menu only” which doesn’t suit everybody (including my wife). Finally, a word on the quality & presentation of the food - it’s as good as many of the Michelin restaurants we have visited and it can only be a matter of time before they get recognised. We are already checking our diary to see when we can return.

We came to Rothay Manor for the all day menu expecting to eat in the bar. The initial welcome at reception was very underwhelming and we were then sat in an ante room and served drinks and an Amouse Bouche and our order taken. After around an hour we were taken to our table. The restaurant is absolutely stunning but totally soulless. Staff are lovely but the whole thing is chaotic-at least six different people served us. My husband ordered a ‘steak pie with chips and gravy’ and I opted for the caramelised onion tart. So the steak pie was basically mince meat with carrots in and not a piece of steak in sight. Chips were frozen and awful and there was no gravy in sight. Mine was even worse. An overly sugary pastry with basically a whole onion in-it was quite simply vile. To be fair I was not charged for my meal but as I could not eat more than my first mouthful it was so disgusting I think that is only fair. The place is jumped up and pretentious. I have never seen a steak pie with mincemeat in it in my life and at £24 it’s quite simply a rip off. It’s confused and lacking in any real direction-something is off and we personally would never return.

We went for dinner in the evening and both the food and the service were excellent. Each of the three courses were very tasty and well presented. The staff were pleasant and attentive without being obtrusive. The only drawback to the evening was the one hour wait between when we arrived for our booked time and sitting down for the meal.

A charming hotel between Ambleside Town centre and the north shore of Windermere. Excellent service and great little touches that made our stay special. This is not a cheap option, but worth it for a treat. If you fancy a bit of luxury and have a dog, it's well worth a look.

An excellent room with good facilities, very professional staff and good food, however the speed of service in the dining room was rather slow.

We visited the Rothay Manor in February 2024. This was our second time visiting the hotel since 2019 and it was even better than the first time. The room was spacious and comfortable and the hot tub was great especially after a day’s walking. The food at breakfasts and dinner in the evenings were delicious and the staff were lovely - kind, helpful, attentive whilst remaining professional at all times. Our golden retriever accompanied us and she was treated like a princess by everyone. If you have a dog, the boot room and dog shower are a fantastic addition since the last time we visited. All in all, visit the Rothay Manor if you can - you won’t be disappointed. Can’t wait until our next visit.
