Hotel la Piazzetta

I had a wonderful 8-day visit to Merida thanks in large part to my decision to stay at Hotel La Piazzetta. I had a spotlessly clean and very quiet garden room--with an extremely comfortable bed, soft sheets, and blackout curtains, I slept better than I have in ages. The upstairs garden, ground floor patio, and breakfast/bar/lobby area were serene spots to read, relax, and simply decompress after a full day of activity. What makes this hotel especially special are the owners, Leo and Maria, and staff, who were all consistently kind, friendly, helpful, and patient with my poor Spanish skills. Leo is the consummate host--gracious and welcoming, offering personalized recommendations for enjoying the city and remembering exactly how his guests like their morning coffee. As they say, the devil is in the details! Highly recommended!

Great small hotel, well located within the Centro area, and within easy walking distance of bars and restaurants around the main square. My wife and I stayed in one of the garden rooms at the rear of the hotel, shrouded amongst cooling vegetation. The beds were extremely comfortable, and the shower and AC worked well. The lobby is cool and breezy and opens onto a small square where we saw several local activities (dancing, card fair etc) take place during our 3 day stay. We had no issues parking our hire car in the spaces bordering this square, and everything felt extremely safe and secure (as did the whole of Merida). Breakfast consisted of a continental style bread/cake, fresh juice, and delicious coffee each day which was all we needed to set ourselves up for the day, without spoiling our appetites for all the delicious food to be had in the city! What made our stay especially enjoyable was the (originally French) owner who is fluent in several languages including English. We found him engaging and friendly, extremely helpful, and he could not have done more to help us by recommending cultural events, bars/restaurants (we particularly enjoyed Bird), and even planning a Cenote trip. All the other staff were equally friendly during our stay - speaking a little Spanish helps. If you are looking for a comfortable, friendly, centrally-located hotel in Merida with handy parking and excellent service you will find it all here. Highly recommended!

The best shower in Mexico. This is a smaller, family hotel. The rooms are very thoughtfully designed, impeccably clean, and everything works perfectly. The staff are friendly, helpful, and available 24 hours a day. The location is close to most everything in Centro.

I cannot put into words the amount of gratitude I have for Leo and Maria at Hotel la Piazetta. I traveled to Mexico with my 17 year old daughter and we felt 100% secure and so well cared for. Our room was spotless, comfortable and extremely spacious with beautiful decor and cozy beds. The property is warm and cozy with plants and two great cats. Lots of room to rest and relax with a view of the lively park right outside. Every morning we were welcomed with coffee and fresh juices as well as pan de muerto. It made us feel like a part of the family to know that each night they made sure we were safe and in the hotel. The personalized attention was incredible! I have traveled to Europe, the Caribbean and Central America as well as around the US and I’ve never been treated so kindly! Our trip was magical- Merida is a MUST DO! I cannot wait to return next year with my best friend for her 50th birthday! Thank you so much Leo and Maria as well as the sweet staff and little Emiliano!

Rundown facility. Long walk to central area. Small rooms and tiny bathrooms. Hodgepodge of shabby furniture. Weak air conditioning. There are so many good hotel choices in Merida run by local people that are as inexpensive as the Piazzetta and are much nicer and closer to the center of the city. The Piazzetta may look close to the center but be aware that in very hot humid weather an extra 5 long blocks is significant. As I am writing this I am double booked in 2 hotels in Merida. I walked out of the Piazzetta after they refused to even give me any credit for my pre-paid second night after I spent my first night in a run-down room with a dying air conditioning unit with a bearing squeeling in its compressor (they told me no other rooms were available when the squeeling started in the middle of the night). I am new to Merida but I am learning that there are many great hotel options here. The Piazzetta is a poor choice. In fact I have stayed in more than 2 dozen hotels in various parts of Mexico (1/2 dozen on the Yucatan peninsula) and I have never experienced the kind of treatment I received at the Piazzetta nor stayed in a hotel as shabby as the Piazzetta. The Piazzetta does a good job on the "soft" tasks of hand holding and introducing you to a foreign city and removing the language obstacle. They don't do so well on the "hard" side of things. The physical condition of their hotel is terrible. The flooring material in the room I had seemed strangely out of place and randomly chosen. The paint on the door to my room looked like it was about 10 layers thick and no preparation was done before painting as the paint underneath appeared to be flaking off. Merida is a beautiful city with many excellent hotels run by local people. The Piazzetta is not one of them.

This was one of the best hotels we stayed in. A truly beautiful place, very quiet and close to the city centre. A very friendly host who recommended a lot of places to see and amazing restaurants with good food. We really enjoyed our stay there.

Wow ! If I could give 10 stars I would ! What a great experience this hotel was ! From the pre-arrival communication to the warm welcome to the constant interest in how our stay was going, everything was perfect. The location is prime (across from a nice little park ina quiet area), but easily walkable to the main square and restaurants, etc. the room is great…strong AC, good water pressure and a nice firm mattress -all the most important things ! Leo is the consulate host and is always right there for questions or requests. His recommendations are spot on ! This is definitely our new “home” in Merida after having tried many other hotels in town !

We found Hotel La Piazzetta online when we planned our round trip on the Yukatán peninsula in Mexico, spring 2023. The hotel had great reviews and appeared as something that needed a visit, an experience in itself. If it was possible to park the car in the street? «No problem», answered the hotel owner immediately. «You can park outside the hotel in the street. It is safe and it’s free. Mexico is a big country and you have to chose your route. We started on the Holbox beaches and for our visit to the pyramids of Uxmal. Mérida was a natural choice for accommodation, as we had rented a car. Leo, the owner of Hotel La Piazzetta, has a career behind him in the travel and hotel business, and here he has created the most charming and unique place – full of love and compassion. There is consideration to be found here, down into details. I will recommend a longer stay here (ours was way to short even if we extended the stay) – not just to explore beautiful Mérida, but because the extraordinary atmosphere here made you feel more like a visitor than a tourist, thanks to Leo. There’s a big difference. The hotel itself is minimalistic and simple in style, yet with a clear personal touch. You see many artifacts with personal value. You can enjoy a peaceful moment in the lobby, decorated with classic rattan furniture. And plants, like a sofisticated jungle. Have a coffee there, or Leo will invite you to the bar for a conversation, making sure you won’t miss any of the local happenings in town. And he knows some good places to eat and drink. “Do you want some mango juice? It’s freshly made, no sugar”. Every morning he will serve you coffe and a croissant, and make sure to enjoy it in the super nice back yard (garden). Hotel La Piazzetta is situated close to most places, walking distance. Next door, you’ll find the lush wine, cocktail and coffee place “Vana” that also serves prosperous sandwiches Mexican style. Calle 50a is safe and quiet and you sense Mérida’s friendly ambiance. This place adds what you need for an extraordinary and unforgettable experience.
