Stayed here for a long weekend organised by a car club. We were a large group and therefore had the use of a function room for breakfasts and two evening meals. The building, and grounds, are very impressive upon arrival as was the welcome at reception. The weather that weekend was cool and damp and the room was cold upon arrival. Our room (109) was bijou and did not have a safe or air con (bearing in mind that this is rated 4star)! The bathroom had been modified with a glass shower screen on the bath which leaked and was fixed in position such that it made it very difficult to enter or exit the bath. Despite adjusting the radiator, we never had heating for the whole of our stay. On top of that, the “hot” water was tepid for that first evening and next mornings shower. We reported these issues and was informed that there were problems with the boilers. Breakfasts were hit & miss with luke warm food, a tea urn with stewed tea and one toaster for 50+ people! Things did improve with breakfasts but only really became acceptable on the last day. The group evening meal, that we attended, which was pre selected, was very average and I left most of my three courses! We were due to attend the second group meal but we, like many others, opted for the restaurant instead which was much better but they did run out of major items. In general, the hotel seemed to be struggling with staffing levels, especially in the bar with long queues at pre meal drinks. Most of the staff were pleasant and helpful but a few should not be in the hospitality industry. I took the trouble of making a formal complaint and refused to pay the final invoice, on departure, until our issues were dealt with. Within days of arriving home I received a detailed apology from the the management and a credit against the final invoice which I then paid. This hotel has the possibility of being 4Star but, apart from the Spa, is in need of considerable investment in many areas.
