Ancient Soap Factory in Aleppo, Syria I remember last month, January 2026, when I was traveling in Syria, many friends mentioned Aleppo soap. Having never used soap before, I didn't think much of it—it's just a bar of soap, right? However, my local guide had already included the soap factory in the itinerary. I was simply happy to take photos of the factory and its people. After touring the factory, I really found the soap-making environment fascinating, and Syria is uniquely blessed with this natural resource. The Aleppo soap factory I visited was originally a stable, but the soap makers modified the buildings to suit soap-making. Now it's a two-story soap factory. The first floor is used for storing raw materials, and the second floor is for drying them. The building consists of rows of parallel arches supported by pillars, topped with perforated gables. Each space on this floor has a specific function: the spaces between the arches are ideal for sorting soft soaps, hand-cutting them, and stamping them with special seals; while the reserved spaces between the arches are used to store cubic-shaped soaps, which are usually arranged in an elegant tower shape to allow air circulation to every corner of each bar. These spaces remain filled with the scent of laurel for six to nine months, the time required for the soaps to dry and be packaged. Fresh soaps are a deep emerald green, then shrink, harden, and change color after a long drying process. It's definitely worth a visit, but the small sales area attached to the factory is half the size of my home warehouse—it's so underwhelming! It's not a tourist attraction; it's a real factory for export, not for sightseeing. But I liked it! Next time, I'll save half my suitcase space for soap in Aleppo!

Aleppo, once a popular tourist city famous for its spectacular white marble, has now been reduced to rubble. During the five-year Syrian civil war, it witnessed countless lives lost and homes destroyed. Many of Aleppo's ancient treasures suffered severe damage in the conflict. Among them, the Great Mosque, built in the 8th century, and the Aleppo Citadel, considered one of the largest and oldest castles in the world, were not spared. During the war, the people of Aleppo were forced to leave their homes in search of safety. Now that the war is over, many houses are being rebuilt, and water supply has been restored in many areas. The citizens of Aleppo hope to rebuild their homes and look forward to Syria returning to its pre-war prosperity, so that those displaced can return home as soon as possible. The city once had a population of 1.9 million, making it an important part of Syria's national population. However, due to the war, many residents had to leave the land. Although reconstruction has just begun, the acting governor of Aleppo has stated that they have received strong support from the Syrian central government and are full of confidence for the future. Figures 10 and 11 show the world's largest covered market after reconstruction.

The Aleppo Citadel, located in the center of Aleppo city in Syria, is one of the oldest urban defense structures in the Middle East. Legend has it that the ancient Jewish patriarch Abraham once distributed milk here to help the poor, and the Arabic name "Halab" means "milk." Originally built in the 3rd century BC during the Seleucid Empire, the main structure that remains today was formed in the 12th century under the Arab Ayyubid dynasty. The citadel sits atop a conical hill, surrounded by a moat 20 meters deep and 30 meters wide, with walls 65 meters high and a 48-degree sloped stone defense at the base. As the core part of Aleppo's old city, the citadel was designated a World Cultural Heritage site in 1986. The citadel has experienced rule by Assyrian, Ancient Greek, Arab, and Ottoman civilizations. In the 12th century, Saladin’s son Al-Malik al-Zahir Ghazi expanded it by adding the moat and secret passages. In the 16th century, it became an important transit point for trade between East and West. In February 2023, a powerful earthquake in Turkey caused cracks in the citadel walls and the collapse of the northeast defense wall. After restoration, it reopened in 2024. During the Syrian civil war, the citadel served as a key stronghold for government forces and was never captured. Post-war restoration has become a symbol of the old city's reconstruction. Existing remains include a 13th-century mosque, water reservoir, and three relief-carved city gates, with entrance decorations featuring carvings of snakes, lions, and the crying-laughing lion.

The irreplaceable cultural heritage of Aleppo—spanning millennia and reflecting the architecture of Hittites, Romans, Mamluks, and Ottomans—has been severely impacted. Despite the scale of the damage, my hope is fervent: this priceless history must be restored. Aleppo's Old City is more than just stone and mortar; it is a repository of human history, a symbol of civilization, and a testament to the city's enduring spirit. Restoration efforts are crucial, not only to rebuild the physical structures but also to revive the memory, identity, and life of the community. Its history is invaluable and deserves to be preserved for future generations.

In 1986, the Ancient City of Aleppo, the oldest human settlement, was selected as a World Cultural Heritage Site for its extremely strong historical and cultural heritage. For a time, the people in the city were excited and told each other about the news. But who could have imagined that just 25 years later, four forces from the east, south, west and north would "join forces" here, and a four-year war involving millions of refugees swept across the sky, smashing the thousand-year-old city to pieces, and also smashing all the peace-loving souls in the city... It takes two hours to get from the old city of Hama to the southern bus station in Aleppo, and the fare is only 6 yuan. After getting off the bus, hop on the bus to the city center. Along the way, you can directly feel the shock of the post-war wasteland city [Figure 2, remember, it must be a large bus, you won’t see small vans]. The old city of Aleppo can be roughly divided into two areas: north and south: ① In the northern area, there are many ancient churches of various denominations. Most of the buildings have colonial style and are relatively well preserved and restored (Figure 3). The church usually opens at around 16:00 every afternoon for evening prayers. If you go too early, it may not be open. The churches include but are not limited to: Forty Martyrs Cathedral (Figure 4-5, Armenian Apostolic Church) Maronite Church (Figure 6, Maronite Catholic Church) Latin Cathedral (Figure 7, Latin Catholic Cathedral) Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption (Figure 8, Syriac Catholic Church) Church of Holy Cross (Armenian Catholic) St Georges Church (Figure 9, Greek Catholic Church, the underground church is decorated with silver pieces dedicated to St. George) National Presbyterian Church Al-Bishara Monastery (Greek Orthodox Church) ② The southern area, which is mainly composed of castles and ancient mosques, has been severely damaged. The castle towers have collapsed (Figure 10), and the Great Mosque of Aleppo has been directly blown into rubble. The entire area is still under slow repair. [Pictures 11-12, friends who want to see the wasteland style should go to the South District and try to go deep into the community. The fewer people there are, the more realistic it is]. Existing ancient mosques are often open only at six fixed prayer times, especially on Fridays when many people go early (Figures 13-14). After the first evening prayer, dusk gradually fell in Aleppo. The coldness and silence of Ramadan made people feel lost in their thoughts, as if they were in a dream...
