Gliwice Market Square

The central point of Gliwice is the 73 × 74 m Market Square, designated in the second half of the 13th century, with two streets leading from its corners. From the beginning of its existence, the Market Square was the main place of political, economic and social life of the city. The city patriciate, engaged in trade and entrepreneurship, lived around it, and various celebrations took place here. Today, the medieval buildings of the Market Square no longer exist. Most of the current tenement houses come from later centuries - mainly the 19th and 20th - and their appearance loosely refers to the Renaissance or Classicist style. This is the result of the post-war reconstruction of some of the tenement houses in Gliwice's Old Town, led by architect Franciszek Maurer. It is thanks to him that the Market Square retained its character, and the tenement houses standing next to it gained the arcades that are visible today. In 2010, during archaeological research preceding the planned redevelopment of the Market Square, an early modern well and relics of brick structures functioning on the Market Square in modern times were uncovered. It is worth taking a look at the tenement houses on the Market Square. Many of them have interesting stories. Yes, the one at no. 25, located in the corner of the Market Square, at the exit of ul. Bytomska. She belonged to the Troplowitz family, Jews from Gliwice, from which was born in Gliwice, Oscar Troplowitz.
