Went to find Aunt Qiuyue, took bus 181 through the central part of Jeju Island, all the way down to Seogwipo, then north to Seoseon Beach. We arranged to meet near Syaejae, where the sea is a translucent blue. The wind was so strong it blew my baseball cap off; the Korean guy behind me gasped and tried to catch it, but I grabbed it myself immediately. Syaejae is next to Ginnyeong; they share the same sea but are two different beaches. Auntie waited for me at Ginnyeong, I waited for her at Syaejae, and we each endured the wind for half an hour before meeting up. We went to a seaside café, Auntie drank hot tea, I had hot cocoa. I told her I must pay, or I would return home with regrets, but she still pulled out her card. Excitedly, I said yes! The waiter laughed at me, then accepted my cash. We talked for many days, and I learned that after retiring, she continued working in elderly health and depression treatment. Time flew by, and I needed to rush back to the city. Auntie said, "Let's look at the sea a bit more," and linked arms with me for a walk by the sea. The wind made her hand very cold, and we walked all the way to the Haenyeo statue. I couldn't bear the thought of parting and felt very sad. Auntie wanted to see me back to Jeju City, but I refused, worried it was unsafe for her to drive alone at night back to Daejeong. She tearfully saw me off at the bus stop, giving me many reminders. When I got on the bus, she stood outside waving goodbye. As the bus drove away, she still stood there waving at me on the platform. She became a tiny dot in my view—what would I become in her eyes? On the way back to the city, I wanted to rewind the film but didn’t know if the mz camera preserved the leader. So I covered the camera with my jacket and manually rewound it with the lid open. I still don’t know what I was thinking, daring to do such a risky operation. The next day I was leaving Jeju Island. On a whim, I went for a walk by the sea, planning to finish this roll, reload, and made the only double exposure. This double exposure is images from different timelines on two different days.
