That Luang ranks first in Vientiane attractions, and That Luang is not allowed to enter for visit. It is said that the relics of Sakyamuni are buried under the tower. The whole body of That Luang is golden, and there are pavilions for worship on all four sides of the bottom. That Luang was originally built in the 3rd century. The shape of That Luang we see now was rebuilt by King Setthathirat in 1566 AD. In 1560, he moved the capital of the Lan Cang Kingdom from Luang Prabang to Vientiane and rebuilt That Luang, adding 30 small towers around it, and started the custom of That Luang Festival. It is said that the ancient That Luang was covered with gold foil all over the body. In 1828, the Siamese invaders stole the real gold on the outer layer and severely damaged That Luang. In the early 1990s, it was restored by France, but the restored That Luang was replaced with gold paint instead of real gold.
