Rurikoji Temple and its pagoda museum
Address: 7-1 Kozancho, Yamaguchi, 753-0081, Japan.
Getting there: Rurikoji stands about 2.5 kilometers north of Yamaguchi Station and can be reached on foot or by rental bicycles.
Highlights: Rurikoji is a Buddhist temple in Yamaguchi City, best known for its five-storied pagoda that is a national treasure. It is built in 1442, and the pagoda is justifiably ranked among Japan's three greatest, alongside those of Horyuji Temple near Nara and Daigoji Temple in Kyoto. Interestingly, the pagoda predates Rurikoji as an institution, which was established only in the late 1400s.😁
There is also a pagoda museum which provides interesting information about the pagodas such as their differences in design, but has limited English explanations. 😬

Joeiji Temple and its famous garden

Getting there: The nearest station to Joeiji Temple is Miyano Station. Joeiji Temple is a 15 minute walk from Miyano Station.
Highlights: Joeiji is a Zen temple famous for its garden, Sesshu. As its name suggests, the garden was built by the well-known monk, painter and garden designer Sesshu.
You can enjoy views of Sesshu from the main temple building, and are welcomed to explore the building's spacious tatami mat rooms. You can then spend some tranquil moments strolling along the circular path that leads around the scenic garden. The precincts of Joeiji encloses several other beautiful Zen temple buildings, as well as a couple of raked pebble Zen gardens. 🤩

Getting there: The St. Francis Xavier Memorial Church stands about 1.3 kilometers northwest of Yamaguchi Station.
Highlights: The Yamaguchi St. Francis Xavier Memorial Church commemorates the Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier. The church was built in 1952. You are welcomed to tour the modern and artistically designed interior of the church. Its first floor houses a museum that exhibits Christian paintings, statues, medallions, clothing and other religious items, as well as old maps depicting the development of Christianity in Japan and showing the route of Xavier's travels.

Yamaguchi Daijingu

Getting there: You can take a bus and stop at Kenchomae bus stop. From the bus stop it takes five minutes to walk to the shrine.
Highlights: Yamaguchi Daijingu, also known as the Dai Shrine Gu is a much smaller and simpler version of the Ise Shrines. Yamaguchi Daijingu consists of an outer and an inner shrine, which are rebuilt every 20 years. Unlike the Ise Shrines, however, the shrines of Yamaguchi Daijingu are located just next to each other. 😬
aThe shrine structures come with a simple, wooden appearance, portraying a purely Japanese architectural style with little influence from mainland Asia. Yamaguchi Daijingu is located within a forest at the outskirts of the city, providing the serene setting for a tranquil visit.😌
