The three-zhang-tall Buddha resides in the Three-Brick Hall, and the bell of Xinghua Temple tolls through the mountain valley
The Xinghua Zen Temple, which is said to have had the Buddha before the hall, is located on the eastern foothills of Yunlong Mountain in Xuzhou City. Originally named Shifo Temple, it was established due to the carving of a large stone Buddha during the Northern Wei Dynasty.
The exact year of the Buddha's carving, as recorded in the 'Xuzhou Annals', is the first year of the Zhengping era (AD 451) of the Northern Wei Dynasty, but later research indicates it was the tenth year of the 'Taihe' era (AD 486) under Emperor Xiaowen. Initially carved into a cliff, the Buddha's head was sculpted in the open air, with a square face and large ears, eyes closed in a gentle smile, and a dignified appearance. It has been referred to as 'Buddha Head Rock' and has a history of over 1,500 years.
In the thirty-first year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1398), the high monk Shengji built structures around the mountain, centering on the stone Buddha and constructing the Great Buddha Hall. It was destroyed by fire in the seventh year of the Xuande era, and to protect the stone Buddha from erosion, 'the body of the stone Buddha was adorned with real gold to complete its color and form.' Additional buildings such as the mountain gate, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the meditation hall, and the scripture tower were constructed, and by the Wanli era, the temple complex had formed, surrounded by ancient trees and imbued with a deep sense of Zen.
The 'Small Hall over the Great Buddha' is a feature of Xinghua Zen Temple. The stone Buddha is approximately three zhang and six chi tall (about 11.52 meters). During the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, the arms and chest were further carved, and it is now the only remaining ancient stone sculpture in Xuzhou. The hall covering the large stone Buddha was built along the mountain cliff, and although not small in area, it is called the 'Three-Brick Hall over the Three-Zhang Buddha' because there are only three layers of bricks under the eaves of the back wall. It is acclaimed as a Zen spectacle, and on the cliff walls beside the great stone Buddha, there are about a thousand small stone Buddha carvings, leading to the saying, 'The niches form the structure, and the carved peaks form the figure.'
The bell and drum tower of Xinghua Zen Temple was built during the Xuande era of the Ming Dynasty, beside the two mountain walls of the main hall. Unlike the typical bell and drum towers, which are small and exquisite, the drum tower exists without a drum, and the bell tower hangs an iron bell from the third year of Xuande, weighing about three tons. The 'bell sound of the temple' is a scenic highlight of Yunlong Mountain.
In 1993, when the new Great Buddha Hall was built, a group of Buddhist niches from the Tang and Song dynasties were unearthed, buried deep underground. The niches vary in form, including single and double-layered niches, with combinations of themes such as a Buddha with two Bodhisattvas, Vaisravana, Bodhisattvas with donors, etc. The lively sculptures reflect everyday Buddhism, and visitors can immerse themselves in admiration as if transported to a mysterious Buddhist realm. There are 195 niches, and a protective room has been specially set up for visitors to view. Mr. Zhao Puchu, the president of the Buddhist Association of China, inscribed the words 'Tang and Song Dynasty Cliff Stone Carvings.'
Reaching the top of Xinghua Zen Temple, one can enjoy the picturesque scenery of Yunlong Lake, search for ancient traces, and recall the friendship between Su Shi, who served as the prefect of Xuzhou, and the hermit Zhang Tianji. They would release cranes every morning, and Su Shi wrote 'Record of Releasing the Cranes,' which was included in 'Guwen Guanzhi.' To the west of the pavilion is the Drinking Crane Spring (originally named Shifo Well), and more than 10 meters away stands the Crane-Inviting Pavilion. The spring and pavilion have coexisted for over a thousand years, with poems and wine celebrating the pavilion. 'Famous mountains and noble scholars rely on each other, and people and places support one another.' Visitors can leisurely explore the past, discuss Su Shi's life experiences, and recite his poetry: 'The myriad trees lock in the Yunlong, ... and the drunken eyes see the way home.'
Yunlong Mountain, Yunlong Lake, and Xinghua Temple complement each other, with the water reflecting the ancient temple. The temple fair of Yunlong Mountain is held annually on the 19th day of the second lunar month, with folk activities that originated during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, over 300 years ago. It is a collective memory for the people of Xuzhou, mainly focusing on Buddhist worship and based on Han culture, highlighting the excellent traditional Chinese culture and the local characteristics of Xuzhou.

📍Xima Platform: Xima Platform is one of the oldest existing relics in Xuzhou‼️ After Xiang Yu destroyed the Qin Dynasty, he proclaimed himself the 'Overlord of Western Chu' and made Pengcheng his capital. Yunlong Academy
Yunlong Academy has a history of over 300 years and is located on the western slope of Yunlong Mountain. The academy was founded in the 60th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign during the Qing Dynasty (1721 AD), when Jiang Zhao, the prefect of Xuzhou, established a charitable school at Huangmao Gang on the western slope of Yunlong Mountain in Xuzhou. By 1735, Li Genyun, another prefect of Xuzhou, transformed the charitable school into an academy.
In 1887, at the invitation of Xuzhou prefect Gui Zhongxing (1833-1897), the famous lyricist and top imperial examinee Feng Xu became the head of Yunlong Academy. Scholars such as Wang Qinlin and Liu Xiang served as teachers, nurturing students including Han Zhizheng, who was elected as a congressman of the Republic of China during President Sun Yat-sen's tenure. Other students from the same period included Xu Shuzheng, Zhang Boying, Zhang Yunsheng, Han Zhizheng, Qi Shizhuo, and Wu Zhitong. After the Xinhai Revolution, Yunlong Academy was destroyed in wars, having existed for 182 years.
The reconstruction project of Yunlong Academy was completed in 2014, consisting of seven courtyards from north to south. Along the central axis, there are sequentially a gatehouse, main gate, second gate, passageway, lecture hall, Wenchang Pavilion, and Yifu Hall, all of which are ancient Chinese double-eaved buildings, decorated with dark red glazed roof tiles. The overall architectural structure is brick and wood, maintaining the representative appearance of Qing Dynasty architecture.

😄 Coming from the museum or Hubu Mountain, go up the mountain from the north gate
The square in front of the museum has been renovated, and the north gate of Yunlong Mountain is now open, which leads directly to the top of Yijie Mountain, passing through the stone archway, Qu Gang jumping fish, Xi Yu Pavilion, Zhang Shanren's former residence, and Dashi Rock Temple. Then keep heading south to the observation deck.
😄 Going up the mountain from Xinghua Zen Temple
Xinghua Zen Temple is equivalent to the east gate, where you can visit the temple and offer incense. The path leads up the mountain, and the exit is at the top of Yijie Mountain, Fanghe Pavilion, Zhang Shanren's former residence, and then turn left all the way south to the observation deck.
😄 Going up the mountain from the west gate, heading straight to the observation deck
If you want to go directly to the observation deck, it takes about ten minutes to reach it from the west gate entrance, and about ten minutes to go down the mountain. The west gate is also the closest entrance to Yunlong Lake and Marriott.
😄 Cable car
There are two cable car boarding points, east and west. The west side is close to Yunlong Lake, and the cable car scenery is also different. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery while going up the mountain. In addition, Yunlong Mountain has a total of 9 sections, and each section of the mountain has different entrances to go up the mountain, so you can choose the nearest one.
Main attractions of Yunlong Mountain: observation deck, Xinghua Zen Temple, Dashi Rock Temple, Zhang Shanren's former residence, Han Dynasty Relief Stone Art Museum, Yunlong Academy, etc.
😄 Yunlong Lake → Yunlong Mountain Cableway → Xuzhou Museum → Hui Long Nest → Hubu Mountain → Xi Ma Tai → 1818 Night Market → Bao Lian Temple
😄 Yunlong Lake is really beautiful. It's very pleasant to walk by the lake, feel the breeze, and watch the sunset. At sunset, the entire lake is shimmering, and the distant mountains stretch on endlessly. Watching the sun slowly set among the mountains, the whole scene is like a huge landscape painting.
😄 Bao Lian Temple is also very worth visiting. The architecture is grand and atmospheric, and it's also very photogenic.

Reverse Travel in Xuzhou - 2
🥸 'Xuzhou Museum' (advance reservation required) The area around the museum is the 'Qianlong Imperial Palace' (free of charge). Directly opposite the museum is the entrance to 'Yunlong Mountain'
It takes about 1h to walk from the entrance to the viewing platform, with stops along the way (the Yunlong Mountain cable car is not long!! Ride selectively). It is recommended to exit from the west gate when descending the mountain
🥸 'Yunlong Lake' Recommended cycling route for a leisurely tour:
East Lake Road to Jinshan Park, then Lake Center Road
After dinner, you can stroll around Suning or Wenmiao
🥸 Recommended for dinner: Xuzhou barbecue
Any barbecue restaurant with small tables at the entrance and full of people is fine
🥸 For breakfast, go to Hubu Mountain for Ma Shi Street sha soup sha soup (with egg) + eight-section youtiao
Don't eat too much, have lunch early, otherwise, you'll have to queue for a long time
Hubu Mountain
Antique market
Food recommendations
🥸 Breakfast: It's suggested to try the Ma Shi Street sa soup, seriously there are so many options, remember to bring an egg. When I went there, it was so crowded that I chose a set meal, which included a little bit of everything, and I thought it was quite good and not too expensive. The key point is that the first floor was too crowded, really no place to sit. After eating, you can take a walk nearby, opposite is an ancient building where you can digest your meal.
🥸 Lunch: It's suggested that everyone could try the local pot chicken
🥸 Dinner: You can wait until later in the evening to go to Fuguo Street for snacks. Xuzhou is especially lively at night. You can go for a Yunlong tea. Fuguo Street is full of eateries, and the 1818 Food Plaza is also very close, about a 5-minute walk. These two places are great for wandering, eating, and drinking.

Xuzhou Yunlong Mountain Park
Yunlong Mountain is a 5A-level scenic spot and one of the well-known check-in attractions in Xuzhou. Although not high in elevation, Yunlong Mountain is lush with greenery, winding and twisting like a divine dragon, and is known as Xuzhou's 'Dragon Vein'. The mountain is home to numerous cultural landscapes, including the Song Dynasty's Fanghe Pavilion and Zhaohe Pavilion, the Drinking Crane Spring, the Ming Dynasty's City Temple, the Shanxi Guild Hall from the Qing Dynasty, the Imperial Stele Pavilion, and more. Below the mountain lies Yunlong Lake. The scenic area is not very large, and a tour takes about an hour or so. Transportation nearby is convenient, with two parking lots, and admission to the scenic area is free.

A Healing Hotel Worth Experiencing!
There's such a Zen-inspired resort hotel in the downtown area of Xuzhou!
This trip to Xuzhou was quite rushed, just passing by for half a day and one night, mainly for this five-star hotel and its barbecue, satisfied upon departure.
Hotel: Yundongjing
Location: Buildings 1 and 2, Yundong Road, Yunlong Mountain, starting at 1189
The hotel opened in 2023, and in Xuzhou, it is a uniquely designed five-star designer hotel. The entire building is a sunken structure with mortise and tenon joints, and the activity area and guest rooms are all on the same level, looking from the outside like a huge Chinese palace. The location is excellent, quiet amidst the hustle and bustle.
Style: The hotel has a Chinese Zen healing style, with tea fragrance everywhere. Upon check-in, there is a welcome tea, a choice of complimentary bath salts, and the morning tea is quite unique, kept warm in a thermos hung on the room door in the morning. There are free singing bowl healing classes, but unfortunately, we were too pressed for time to experience them.
Hardware: The room size is not very large, which is somewhat disappointing. There is underfloor heating and central air conditioning, so it's not cold at all after a shower. Each room has a small balcony, but due to the overall sunken structure, the balcony has high walls.
Bedding: Fairly standard, in line with five-star hotel configurations
Amenities: Parma water toiletries with a fresh orange scent, Dyson hairdryer, and various styling nozzles included.
Mini bar: Tea, coffee, and drinks are all available.
Breakfast: Customized health set menu plus buffet. To be honest, I don't know how to appreciate the health meals, but the taste of the buffet pastries is very good.

Xuzhou|||Xuzhou's Yunlong Mountain is worth climbing. The mountain is not high and it takes only about fifteen minutes to reach the top, but it offers a feeling of overlooking all the other mountains, and the panoramic view of the city is super beautiful!
📩Suggestions:
It is recommended to enter from the north gate, where there are many nearby attractions, including a museum. In the afternoon, you can first visit the museum and then go climbing. It takes about half an hour to reach the viewing platform, where you can watch the sunset🌄
You can take the cable car🚡 down the mountain, a one-way trip on the ropeway costs 40 yuan, taking you directly to Yunlong Lake Station, where you can ride an electric bike.
In the evening, stroll through the Hubu Mountain night market, Hanlin, the night view is very beautiful.
A local uncle told me that he climbs Yunlong Mountain two or three times a week to exercise, mainly because there is no admission fee🎫, he loves it so much.
Finally, I hope we all practice Leave No Trace outdoors, the scenic area has garbage points, we should all take care of the environment, so that people who come later can see even more beautiful scenery.

The mountain is divided into nine sections, winding and undulating like a divine dragon, with its head pointing to the northeast and its tail to the southwest. During the Song Dynasty, Su Dongpo, who served as the governor of Xuzhou, frequently visited Yunlong Mountain with friends, leaving behind many famous and enduring literary works.
🚗Highlights:
Yunlong Mountain boasts both natural scenery and cultural landscapes. There are numerous cultural relics on the mountain, including the Great Stone Buddha from the Northern Wei Dynasty, Tang and Song Dynasty cliff carvings, the Song Dynasty's Crane Releasing Pavilion, the Ming Dynasty's Xinghua Zen Temple, and the Qing Dynasty's Dashiyen, among other historical and cultural monuments.
🎫Ticket Information:
Free, with a recommended visiting time of over 3 hours
✨Travel Tips:
Yunlong Mountain covers a large area. Although not tall, it is quite long, and the mountains and peaks resemble a series of steps. Entering from the archway opposite the Xuzhou Museum, you can first visit the Yunlong Academy, which has many cliff carvings, and then hike up to the Dashiyen Temple and Xinghua Zen Temple. Alternatively, you can enter directly from the east gate of Yunlong Mountain to Xinghua Zen Temple. After visiting these places, you can head south, climbing up to the scenic viewing platform, which offers the best views. From there, you can see the entire Yunlong Lake. It is recommended to come in the afternoon to witness the sunset over Yunlong Lake, which is particularly stunning. The evening breeze is also very pleasant. There are not many scenic spots in the latter sections of the mountain, and the paths involve a lot of ascending and descending, so it is not recommended to continue. After the viewing platform, you can exit through the west exit. There are many forks in the road down the mountain, and any of them will take you west to Yunlong Lake.
SIENNA BLAIR
Charming Xuzhou, the bustling Pengcheng
In my impression, Xuzhou was just an ancient city known for the Huaihai Campaign. It was only after visiting that I realized this city is not only historically profound, with a rich Han cultural heritage, but also possesses the prosperity, beauty, and fashion of a modern metropolis. It is not only the hometown of Emperor Liu Bang but also the place where he appointed his younger brother Liu Jiao as the King of Chu. The famous King of Chu's mausoleums are located here, and the well-known national treasures such as the jade suit sewn with gold thread and the jade dragon ornament were unearthed from these tombs.
Yunlong Lake is rippling with clear waves, with boats coming and going, beautiful, open, and full of vitality. Yunlong Mountain may not be high, but ancient temples are scattered on the mountain, including Bodhi Temple, Dashiyansi Temple, and Xinghua Zen Temple, with ancient-style architecture, thriving incense, and the sound of bells and drums that never cease.
Accompanied by the green pines and bamboo, it truly feels like entering a paradise. Particularly surprising is the Yunlong Academy hidden in a corner of Yunlong Mountain. This academy is grand in scale, with simple and ancient architecture, and each building is flanked by elegant couplets. These couplets reflect a profound cultural heritage, showcasing the brilliance of ancient Confucian classics. Here, it is quiet and elegant, and once inside, one is free from all distractions. The ancients were wise to love learning and to choose such a secluded place; I truly envy them!
The Han Cultural Park in Xuzhou is grand, with pleasant scenery and a strong cultural atmosphere. The mysterious King of Chu's mausoleum is a testament to the wisdom and luxury of the ancients; the exquisite terracotta warriors of the Han dynasty highlight the continuous improvement in pottery art; the beautiful Han paintings depict the rich and colorful life of the Han era, leading one to ponder the connection with a thousand years of history... Walking in the park is like traveling back to the Han dynasty, feeling a sense of pride as a citizen of the great Han.
The hustle and bustle and the lively atmosphere of Xuzhou are mainly reflected in Hui Long Wo and Hubu Mountain Pedestrian Street in the city center. These two places have beautiful night scenes and brilliant lights. They possess the beauty of the Ten-Mile Qinhuai River and the romance of Chengdu's Wide and Narrow Alleys... Being there is like strolling through a celestial market, as if one has also taken on an ethereal aura.
The delicacies of Xuzhou are the legendary 'clay pot stewed chicken' and 'special noodles (rice noodles)', which are delicious and affordable. The small shops are also decorated in an ancient style, which is very tasteful.
...
The trip to Xuzhou was a feast for the eyes, with beautiful scenery, delicious food, and a broad view of Han culture, especially the Han paintings and the exquisite terracotta warriors of the Han dynasty, which were refreshing. The three-day trip to Xuzhou and Taierzhuang ancient city was truly worthwhile! Yunlong Mountain

⚠️Ps: The images are from past years' shootings, and due to the cold air, it is still unknown when the flowers will bloom this year, but Xiaoqu will find time to check out the spots, and updates will follow in the notes!😬

Pengcheng~Xuzhou
Perhaps encounter the red walls and green tiles of the past
Or there are red beans quietly sprouting in the heart
Perhaps it is deliberately misunderstanding the snow, moon, wind, and flowers
The former Pengcheng, now Xuzhou
From red walls and green tiles to towering buildings
What remains unchanged is the grandeur of the hometown of Emperor Gaozu of Han
What has changed is the accelerating pace of modern life
Generations have witnessed the development and changes of Xuzhou
From a civilized city to a tourist city and then to a food paradise
Civilization continues, charm never ends
The land where the dragon has flown for thousands of years, the hometown of emperors!

A must-try experience for parents in Xuzhou | Take a ride on the Lakefront Cable Car
There are two must-see places in Yunlong Mountain, one is the Stone Buddha, and the other is the observation deck. These two places are not on the same mountain... the distance is quite far, there is a feeling of climbing up and down, but we still insisted on walking down. What supports our belief is the Lakefront Cable Car of Yunlong Mountain.
There are two cable cars under the observation deck of Yunlong Mountain, one is to Yunlong Lake, and the other is to Pengzu Garden. The lakefront cable car we are talking about is to Yunlong Lake, it is said that the sunset is super beautiful. We didn't have enough time, so we chose to climb the mountain and take the cable car in the afternoon.
The cable car is semi-open, you can feel the breeze on your face, and the view is wider.
At the junction of autumn and winter, the vegetation on Yunlong Mountain is colorful, with red, yellow and green intertwined, and it is especially beautiful when looking down from a God's-eye view. There are colorful boats on Yunlong Lake, a white umbrella pavilion by the lake, and the trees next to it are topped with red and yellow leaves, which are extremely beautiful.
After getting off the cable car, you will reach the lake, and you can just stroll along the lake, which is really convenient.
