A massive gorge located near the borders of Wakayama, Nara, and Mie prefectures We took a tour of Dorokyo to enjoy its stunning scenery. As you can see in the photos, it's about a 40-minute round trip on a traditional Japanese riverboat. Instead of a large sightseeing ship, you travel on a small boat right near the water's surface, which was amazing because you could feel the sheer scale of the rock walls up close. The boarding point is the Tamakiguchi Satellite in Kumanogawa-cho, Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture. We showed up without a reservation, but luckily there was an opening. They told us, "You can hop on at this time," so we only had to wait a little bit before boarding. Once on the riverboat, we slowly made our way through the deep gorge. At one point, the boat sped up so much that I was surprised, thinking, "Whoa! This boat can go that fast?!", Honestly, I didn't expect it to be this thrilling before we went, but massive rock walls towered on both sides, offering views you can only get from the river. Passing through the narrow gaps between the rocks really felt like venturing into an unexplored wilderness. The breathtaking combination of crystal-clear water, the tranquil river, and the giant rocks left a lasting impression on me. Along the way, our veteran boatman—an excellent storyteller—shared all sorts of fascinating facts, which was another highlight of the trip. He pointed out how close we were to the prefectural borders, mentioned that crossing a nearby bridge takes you to a different prefecture, and told us about a building on the cliffs that used to be a bustling tourist hub. Hearing his stories while taking in the views made the experience feel even more like a hidden adventure. Tested the essence of the Kumano Kodo trail! This route is definitely worth rushing for~ Itinerary: Hayatama Taisha → Kamikura Shrine → Daimonzaka → Nachi Taisha → Seiganto-ji Temple → Hiryu Taisha → Nachi Waterfall → Kii-Katsuura → Kumano Hongu Taisha After researching the bus options for a long time, I decisively chose a private car, so I had full control over the time! Hiked 4 km from Daimonzaka to Nachi Waterfall, surrounded by towering trees that are super healing. I recommend at least 1.5 hours to stroll slowly. Had lunch at Kii-Katsuura Seafood Market. The taste was good but a bit pricey; one set meal wasn’t enough 😂 After eating, went to the pier for a foot bath! The lonely torii gate in the sea (Shirohebi Benzaiten Shrine) is a must-visit. You can even go into the sea and see many sea cucumbers (PS: after taking photos, they were returned to their original place, with a release video). Finally rushed to Kumano Hongu Taisha. The large torii gate is quite impressive! On the way from the old site to the new site, there’s a small supermarket where the Wagyu beef is excellent value. Bought some to add to the meal at the guesthouse—another satisfying day~ The overall route is smooth without detours, satisfying both natural scenery and cultural heritage. Staying in Shingu for a day post Kumano Kodo trek. Walked to the Kamikura Shrine precinct and enjoyed the serene greenness of the area. The first run of stairs leading up the hillside to this shrine is the steepest and most daunting, but the views over the city are totally worth the 500+ stair climb to this pretty little shrine. Just take it slow and easy and you'll reach your reward. There's a windy dirt trail that bypasses these steep stairs and leads from a flat rest point at the midpoint of the climb down to the bottom. It looks to some folks like it might be easier to take than the stairs, but I think the many tree roots on this path actually make it more dangerous, particularly if there's been rain and the soil is slick. Our legs went straight to muscle memory and enjoyed climbing up the steep steps. Spectacular views across Shingu to the sea. A very enjoyable experience. #givethanks #givethanks

On the afternoon of day one, I headed straight for the "final boss"—Kumano Nachi Taisha. After conquering a thigh-burning flight of stone steps, the legendary Nachi Waterfall and the vermilion three-story pagoda perfectly framed together, looking so stunning that I instantly forgot I was just panting like a dog. Looking back at the "backward-glancing" Yatagarasu, I felt like it was teasing my weak legs. On the morning of day two, I shifted to the flatter grounds of Kumano Hayatama Taisha. The brilliant, vibrant red architecture was an absolute feast for the camera, and I quickly prayed to the divine bird holding a Nagi leaf in its beak for a safe journey ahead. The noon grand finale on day two was the historical heavyweight: Kumano Hongu Taisha. The Yatagarasu here proudly spreads its wings forward, radiating majestic energy. Stepping into this ancient wooden shrine, my body and soul were instantly cleansed by the refreshing forest air and a profoundly sacred vibe. The ultimate highlight was walking over to Oyunohara, where Japan's largest giant torii gate, towering into the clouds, completely blew my mind. After a day and a half, my legs have turned to jelly, but with the blessings of these three divine birds guiding the way, I feel like I'll never lose my direction in life again!

The rustic stone torii gate and massive stone monument, bathed in the evening clouds, along with the offering flags lining the approach, create a truly authentic Japanese shrine atmosphere. The environment here is incredibly tranquil, without the crowds of tourists, allowing for a leisurely stroll. Walking along the stone-paved approach, I unexpectedly stumbled upon a hidden gem under the shade of trees – "Xu Fu's Palace"! Yes, that's right, the Xu Fu from history textbooks, the one Qin Shi Huang sent to sea to find the elixir of immortality! Legend has it that he landed in this area and settled down, where locals built a small shrine to worship him as a deity – it's truly magical! A weathered ancient stone path leads to the shrine, creating a cross-temporal encounter with the historical legend of two thousand years ago, maximizing the sense of mystery. OMG! The most thrilling and absolutely craziest spot we hit on this Kumano trip has to be Kamikura Shrine! From a distance, the massive boulder known as Gotobiki-iwa looks like it's just hanging off the edge of a cliff, with a bright vermilion shrine wedged right underneath it. It seriously looks like it could come tumbling down at any second. The visual impact is absolutely off the charts—it's unbelievable! But catching a glimpse of this marvel in person comes at a serious price. The second I got to the entrance and saw that "stairway to heaven"—538 jagged, natural stone steps at a steep 45-degree angle—I almost turned right back around. I literally had to scramble on my hands and knees to make it to the top! Even though the climb nearly took me out and left my legs turning to jelly, the moment I reached the summit, it was all worth it. Seeing that mysterious giant rock wrapped in a sacred Shinto shimenawa rope, paired with a breathtaking panoramic view of Shingu City and the Pacific Ocean, made every drop of sweat totally worth it! Getting a photo here will definitely give you bragging rights for an entire year!

Having just visited Hayatama Taisha Shrine, I immediately rushed to this nearby torii gate, rumored to be "Japan's largest"! This torii gate is a towering 11 stories high. Seeing it in person was incredibly awe-inspiring; standing beneath it, you felt as small as an ant. You had to use your phone's wide-angle lens at its maximum to barely capture it all! In front of the torii gate is a super cool black crow statue; I heard it's a local guide sent by the gods called "Yatagarasu," and it has three legs—very unique! This used to be the old site of Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine. Although only this large torii gate remains, it's surrounded by rice paddies and mountains, a landscape so beautiful it's like a painting. Whether you're a religious person or not, just for the title of "Japan's largest," it's definitely worth taking a photo and making your presence felt!

I finally made it to Wakayama's super famous World Heritage Site, "Kumano Hayatama Taisha"! The moment you arrive, you'll be absolutely blown away by the dazzling vermilion buildings. Set against a clear blue sky, it’s incredibly photogenic—every random snap turns out amazing! The coolest part is the massive sacred rope (shimenawa) at the entrance; posing underneath it makes you look so tiny. Inside, there's a magnificent 1,000-year-old sacred tree. Legend has it that people in the old days would pick its leaves to use as amulets for safety and finding true love. I totally jumped on the bandwagon and said a little prayer, hoping for smooth sailing this year! Compared to the other two Kumano shrines, this one is by far the most accessible—no grueling hikes that turn your legs to jelly! I highly recommend crossing this spot off your bucket list when you visit Wakayama. It'll definitely blow up your social media feeds!

On this railway journey connecting the sacred mountains and seas of Wakayama with Ise in Mie, I took the Kuroshio Express for the first leg, and for the second leg, departed from Kii-Katsuura Station on JR Central's newest Limited Express "Nanki." As mentioned in a previous post, this trip was all about exploring the Kumano Sanzan, and since Kumano Hayatama Taisha is also located right here in Shingu City, I decided to make a quick detour to check out the Shingu Castle Ruins and Asuka Shrine. My first stop was Asuka Shrine, which is a fairly compact shrine. There's a World Heritage stone monument standing right outside, and it only takes about 15 minutes to look around. By the way, you can also collect the Shingu Castle stamp here— it's kept inside the History and Folklore Museum. A 10-minute walk from there brings you to the Shingu Castle Ruins. There are some stairs to climb to get up to the castle, and on the way up, I spotted a few local residents here and there using the steps for their daily workout. Once you reach the foundation of the main keep, you get a great panoramic view of the surrounding area, and it takes about 30 minutes to explore the whole place. If you're ever in Shingu City, these spots are definitely worth adding to your itinerary.
