Shanghai Marine Aquarium is the only aquarium in the world with an independent exhibition area in China and the Yangtze River Basin to display aquatic organisms with Chinese characteristics. Most of the exhibited organisms are state protected animals, including Chinese sturgeon, carmine, Chinese alligator and baby salamander (giant salamander).
