You may as well go see it...there’s not much else to do. You don’t need a 4x4, but the road is a whooptie do rodeo. The rock is totally cool...bummer about all the graffiti. Make sure you read up on all the history and don’t get abducted or probed by any aliens.

San Diego is one of the border cities on the U.S. coastline, close to Mexico and with plenty of port resources, this cliff park is a steep spot to enjoy a sunset show at night.

The preserve is a pleasant stop on the road to Joshua NWR.Good birding if one knows where to wander.Preserve host has several feeders in a shaded area with chairs !!One can relax and get id’s of birds they see.The Wednesday 8 AM birding tour is excellent , led by experienced birders. This is a MUST DO for serious birders.

The Zabriskie corner overlooks the entire canyon from the observation deck, with unique folded landforms, golden rocks that look like wind-blown dunes, and it is estimated that the scenery should be even better when shooting sunrise and sunset.

I would say this is a good place to visit if in this section of the Mojave Reserve but not really worth driving here just for the dunes. I came to the reserve to hike a mountain peak nearby but there was so much fog and rain that I came to the Kelso Dunes first to spend a couple hours while the weather cleared. The road to the dunes is perfectly navigable for any vehicle in the rain. There are some potholes but the road is compacted to concrete like consistency so no sinking or mud. It took me about 30 minutes to hike from the parking area to the top of the highest dune. I suspect the rain had made the sand harder/more compact and easier to walk on than most days so it was not strenuous at all. There are bathrooms at the parking area which I found surprising in the middle of nowhere. You could spend an hour here or an entire day here depending on how much you want to explore.

Came here looking for tidepools and were not disappointed! Originally tried Fermin but the walk down the bluffs did not look safe at all. Drove north and just discovered this—a steep road leads down and let’s you park right below the bluffs, where a magical system of sandy beaches and small sandy or rocky pools appears at low tide. We arrived 2 hours before low tide and it was perfect. Abundant if typical marine life in great health, plus sun warmed wading pools with sandy floors for the kids to splash in. Plus gorgeous scenery, many pelicans, Catalina in the distance, large ships passing, and a sighting of a zeppelin, which apparently moors nearby.

Chips (Potato Chip Rock) San Diego, California, United States, there is a place called Mt Woodson, there is a magic rock at the top of that mountain, called Chips (Potato Chip Rock), the rock is very thin, it seems that it can not bear weight, a person standing on it will break a foot. But in fact, it has a lot of gravity, even a dozen people standing on it is no problem. Standing on the potato chip rock, it seems to be on the cliff, there is a feeling of standing in the blue sky and white clouds. Some travel websites in China depict this rock as a god. In fact, this place is indeed a very good hiking place, but there is nothing thrilling at all.

Great little campsite off the beaten track, definitely worth the few extra miles to get here (coming from the North I luckily only discovered afterwards that Black Canyon Road North of Hole-in-the-Wall was closed: recent snowmelt made parts of the dirt road a very slippery trip - the Southern approach has a tarmac road). The 35 sites were well kept with nice flat areas for the tent (although most people during this winter visit seemed to come here in RVs or trailers). It was wonderfully quite and the views splendid. It’s just 2 minutes walk to the Hole-in-the-Wall visitors centre from where the famous Rings Loop Trail starts. It’s a fun little 1 mile hike which takes you through some weird rock formations. There are only two very short ring sections (ca 3 m each) where you would need to pull yourself up (if you do the loop clockwise which strangely not a lot of people seem to do). The visitors centre was closed and looked abandoned but maybe that was just for the winter season.

Cabrillo tide pools are fun to visit. We looked at a tide chart, and found out that on the day we were going to visit that the low tide was at 2:00pm. We had seen a very long line into the park a couple of years ago, so we decided to get there about 2 hours before the lowest tide. It was a great decision- as there was no line to enter the park and we could easily park near the tide pools! (I see that parking could be extremely difficult during low tide.) The pools were fun to walk around and explore. We could easily find hundreds of little hermit crabs and a few anemone. I was a bit disappointed that we only saw two starfish, and not much else. The volunteers were wonderful and knowledgeable! They were the ones that found the two star fish we did see - a beautiful Knobby Star and a very rare Soft Star. Definitely the highlight of the stop!
