Chenggu Bell Tower

The bell tower is located in the southeast of Chenggu County, a quaint and exquisite tower building. According to the "Chenggu County Zhi", the bell tower was built in the Qing Jiaqing period, and then burned down and rebuilt in the Guangxu period. Renovations have been made many times before and after 1949, the most recent being the restoration and reconstruction of provincial cultural relics protection units in 2006.

The bell tower has four stories of brick and wood structure, about 15 meters high, three stories of pavilions, three stories of eaves, and four stories of top floor with full roof and eaves. Four corners of the eaves, like eagles to fly, spread their wings, sharp skyward. Its roof is compact and contractive, but hexagonal, particularly beautiful. The eaves are circular in shape, stretching and warping outwards; the ridge of the eaves is shaped by a resourceful bird and animal, while the lower abdomen is piled up with rivets and tenons, densely covered with various patterns, with a wind bell hanging at the front end. The bottom floor of the bell tower is a brick square platform about 10 meters long, and the bottom is hollow. It is an arch structure with four sides in common. The second, third and fourth floors are mainly wooden structures, with wooden pillars as bones and wooden lattice windows as walls to create square pavilions, whose area is gradually reduced from top to bottom. The Pavilion is surrounded by a two-foot-wide pedestrian walkway with a three-foot-high wooden fence at the edge. These wooden eaves, corridors, panes and fences are painted dark red. If in the spring sunset, the whole bell tower is bathed in the soft sunset, the red and the indigo of the glazed tiles shine brightly, which is very beautiful; if there happens to be a gentle breeze, the wind bells under the rocking eaves will make bursts of crisp sounds, then the scene will be intoxicating. The four arches of the Bell Tower are facing the four directions of the street. To the south is the South Street. There is a corner called Silang Temple. To the west, it is known as Wuzumiao Street. To the east, it goes to Dadongguan. To the north, it is called the Old Street.
