Wat Chedi Luang

Wat Chedi Luang, like Wat Phra Singh, is one of the most popular temples in Chiang Mai. This temple is also known as the 'Great Pagoda Temple' because of the tall and majestic pagoda inside, although it is now in ruins. Wat Chedi Luang is a place with many stories. Not only does it have a large pagoda and the 'City Pillar' of Chiang Mai, but it also once housed the precious Jade Buddha, which is now worshipped in Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok. Like Wat Phra Singh, the origin of this temple is also a burial place built by the Lanna King Saen Muang Ma for his father. The king wanted to make the pagoda bigger and stronger, but it was still not completed when the king died. The king's widow continued the king's will, and during the reign of King Tilokaraj, the pagoda reached a height of 82 meters, making it the tallest building in Lanna at the time. However, the good times did not last long, and the top of the pagoda collapsed in a major earthquake in 1545.

It was an experience that I am so grateful for. We headed to the hostel and woowww, this hostel is so serene and beautiful - it truly lives up to its name:( @hiddengardenhostel ). Our favourite adventures so far are the temples. Wat Chedi Luang was an incredible sight, originally beginning construction in the 14th century, the temple resembles ancient ruins. We were shocked at how many good shops there were around Chiang Mai- lots being very modern, selling beautiful handmade items. We visited the completely silver covered temple & then sat and had a Chang Classic beer, as we people watched at a local bar. This temple is located in the heart of Chiangmai. We took a red public transportation from Tha Phae gate and paid 30 baht per person. This temple is stunning, as evidenced by the photo. Every year Wat Chedi Luang is hosting Overnight prayer event on December 31st. In my opinion, it was the best place to do overnight prayer in Chiangmai. There were seating on all side of the pagoda, plenty of chairs available. In the beginning, they would allocate prayer books so it was easy to follow the prayer. At the end, the would give small amulets to everyone. The setting was incredibly charming. The pagoda itself was beautiful. It was such a spiritual event after all. This is a temple that is rich in history. There is the Inthakhin Pillar Vihara temple which unfortunately only men are allowed to enter (ladies are not allowed to enter because they believe the women's menstruation affects the sanctity of the temple) but it was not a big turn off as there are a lot of other things to see. What some people would miss while looking at the blingy Buddha statues are the relics left of the high ranking monks. #GiveThanks

This temple’s area was so huge. Located in old town Chiang Mai, this place was always busy. You need to buy a ticket first then you can come inside the temple. It was a freaking hot, humid day. So if you want to find peace, you can come inside the temple, sit down, and just be quiet. It actually cooled me down.
