The Shuling Pagoda is a stone tower about 20 meters high, built in 1936. According to legend, in order to develop the precious timber resources in the Alishan area, the Japanese cut down a large number of giant red cypress trees for thousands of years. Soon after, those fellers began to die from strange diseases. The Japanese believed that tree spirits were at work, so they built this building. The stone pagoda is used to suppress the tree spirits and worship the chopped red cypress.
