Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Huesca (Region) In Jaca, be sure to visit the castle, a fine example of 16th century military architecture, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. The castle was built in 1592. Thus, the monument was pentagonal in plan, of imposing size, including a moat, and built on flat ground. There are other very important buildings such as the Romanesque Cathedral (11th century), declared a National Monument, the Benedictine Monastery, the Church of Santiago, the Hermitage of Zalsa, the San Miguel Bridge, the Bell Tower (15th century) and the Town Hall. One of its most important festivals takes place on the first Friday in May and commemorates a medieval battle. There are tournaments, jousting, magnificent processions of standard-bearers, and trials in ancient Aragonese sports such as the bar throw. June 25th is an important day in Haka to celebrate the patron saint’s day. It features a procession carrying an urn containing the remains of the patron saint, Saint Orosia, around which dancers perform an ancient castanet dance accompanied by sacred and ancient instruments: the chiflo and stringed instruments. #AprilDestinations2025 #SpainTravel #Aragon

Pyrenees Adventure in Spain ~ Huesca (Region) Also known as "Castle of Jaca," this fortress was built between the 16th and 17th centuries under the orders of King Philip II and restored in 1968. Engineer Spanochi followed military architectural standards derived from the use of artillery. It is the only fortress of this architectural style still standing in the world today. The layout is pentagonal, with arrow-shaped bastions at each corner and a moat that now serves as a resting place for deer. Its drawbridge leads to the parade ground, which is surrounded by various barracks. One of these houses a military miniature museum, where you can learn more about the castle's history through 32,000 lead soldiers.

A journey through the Pyrenees in Spain—Huesca (region) Closely tied to the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and the Romanesque architecture that spread through Somport into Aragon and reached Jaca. Originating in the 6th century during the reign of Sancho Ramírez, it is considered one of the most important monuments of Spanish Romanesque art, closely associated with the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The cathedral was built following a rectangular church layout, featuring three apses aligned with three naves. In the 15th century, a new church and choir stalls were constructed, and the roof was restored. During the height of the Renaissance, in the 16th and 17th centuries, restoration work led to the disappearance of the Romanesque appearance of the sanctuary.

Inside, you can visit a small military museum, and its central courtyard hosts cultural events. It's best to go for photos when the sun is shining. They offer free audio guides with headphones, which is very convenient. They even have Chinese-language audio guides available. You can see the Sagrada Familia from the rooftop. Pretty good.

Definitely worth a visit! The architecture is exquisite and artistically captivating, truly breathtaking! Especially the final digital display! The service was excellent, the staff were very patient. The Chinese audio guide was superb!

Sagrada Familia

Must go! With the tickets, no need to queue very long. Can easily spend 2-3 hrs there! In mid-October, the sunset is late, getting in around 5pm, we can enjoy fully the light changes inside.
