🏴 Scotland Road Trip: 15 Days Through the Highlands, Islands & Castles ✨
If I had 15 days to explore Scotland by car, this is the route I would take. It combines historic cities, dramatic Highland landscapes, beautiful islands, castles, lochs and some of the most scenic roads in the country.
🗺️ My 15-Day Route
Edinburgh → Stirling → Loch Lomond → Oban → Glencoe → Fort William → Isle of Skye → Eilean Donan → Loch Ness → Inverness → Cairngorms → Pitlochry → St Andrews → Edinburgh
📅 Day-by-day itinerary
Days 1-2 | Edinburgh 🏰
Start with two nights in Edinburgh. Explore Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Victoria Street, Dean Village and Calton Hill. In the evening, head to Stockbridge or Leith for a good restaurant and a traditional pub.
Day 3 | Edinburgh → Stirling → Loch Lomond
Pick up your car and drive towards Stirling. Visit Stirling Castle before continuing to Loch Lomond. Stay around Luss or Balloch and enjoy the beautiful scenery around the loch.
Days 4-5 | Loch Lomond → Oban 🌊
Drive west towards Inveraray and then continue to Oban. Stop at Inveraray Castle along the way. Spend the next day exploring Oban or take a day trip to the Isle of Mull if ferry times work with your plans.
Day 6 | Oban → Glencoe → Fort William 🏔️
This is one of the most spectacular drives of the trip. Drive through Glencoe and Rannoch Moor, stopping frequently for photographs. Continue to Fort William for the night.
Day 7 | Glenfinnan
Visit Glenfinnan Viaduct and Loch Shiel. The area is famous for the Harry Potter films, but even without that connection, the surrounding landscape is absolutely beautiful.
Days 8-10 | Isle of Skye 🌄
Give Skye three nights because there is so much to see.
Visit the Old Man of Storr, Quiraing, Kilt Rock, Fairy Pools, Neist Point, Portree and Dunvegan Castle.
Don’t try to see everything in one day. The weather can change quickly on Skye, so having extra time makes the experience much more enjoyable.
Day 11 | Skye → Eilean Donan → Loch Ness → Inverness
Leave Skye and stop at the spectacular Eilean Donan Castle. Continue towards Loch Ness and visit Urquhart Castle before arriving in Inverness.
Day 12 | Inverness + Culloden
Take a slower day. Visit Culloden Battlefield and the mysterious Clava Cairns before spending the evening exploring Inverness.
Day 13 | Inverness → Cairngorms → Pitlochry 🌲
Drive through Cairngorms National Park, stopping around Aviemore and Loch an Eilein. Continue south to Pitlochry for the night.
Day 14 | Pitlochry → St Andrews → Edinburgh
Head towards St Andrews and explore its historic streets, cathedral ruins, harbour and famous Old Course. Continue back to Edinburgh for your final night.
Day 15 | Edinburgh ✈️
Enjoy one final Scottish breakfast and a last walk around Edinburgh before heading to the airport.
🛏️ Nights at a glance
Edinburgh: 2 nights
Loch Lomond: 1 night
Oban: 2 nights
Fort William: 2 nights
Isle of Skye: 3 nights
Inverness: 2 nights
Pitlochry: 1 night
Edinburgh: 1 night
14 nights / 15 days
🚗 My tip: Don’t underestimate Scottish roads. Many Highland and island roads are narrow and winding, and you’ll want to stop constantly for viewpoints and photos. I would rather spend three nights on Skye than rush through five different places.
This route gives you a little bit of everything I love about Scotland: dramatic mountains, wild coastlines, castles, lochs, charming villages, islands, wildlife and beautiful scenic drives. 🏴✨

🚂 EP.5 | West Highland Line —
🌫️ Rannoch Moor
🏔️ Ben Nevis
Fort William
🌊 Loch Shiel & Loch Eilt
🌉 Glenfinnan Viaduct
🚆 Mallaig
