The soul of Britain lies in the countryside, stepping into hidden England — traveler post in Sheffield

The soul of Britain lies in the countryside, stepping into hidden England

If you ask me where in Britain is worth visiting, my answer might not be the London Eye, Big Ben, or Oxford and Cambridge. It’s the countryside. Those stone cottages hidden in the valleys, thatched roofs nestled among flowers, winding stone walls crossing pastures—this is the truest, gentlest face of Britain. If you’ve already seen the bustle of London, next time you come to Britain, try this "Countryside Soul Journey." ... 🌿 Why the countryside? Because here you find the British slow life. In the Cotswolds, honey-colored stone cottages have quietly stood for hundreds of years. In the Lake District, England’s highest mountains and deepest lakes are all here. Windermere, the hometown of Peter Rabbit, has swans swimming on the lake and sheep grazing on the hillsides. In the Yorkshire Dales, wilderness and pastures intertwine—the story of Wuthering Heights took place here. The British countryside has the power to heal everything. · 🏞️ Countryside Soul Journey: Highlights Starting from Edinburgh | The prologue to Scotland Feel the spirit of Scotland in Edinburgh. Climb Calton Hill to watch the sunset, with the whole city spread out beneath you. The cobblestone streets of the Old Town and the thick stone walls of the castle immerse you in Scottish atmosphere. Lake District | England’s backyard garden Heading south from Edinburgh, the first stop is Lake District National Park. Take a boat on Windermere, visit the Dove Cottage in Grasmere, and daydream by the bridge and houses in Ambleside. Cotswolds | England’s most beautiful countryside Drive or walk through the towns of Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Stow-on-the-Wold—every frame is a postcard. Arlington Row has stood here for over six hundred years. Oxford | A dialogue of academia and architecture The dining hall of Christ Church College was a filming location for Harry Potter, and the Bodleian Library holds medieval manuscripts. Here, you can feel the weight of accumulated knowledge. London | The final urban punctuation Return to London and end your trip with the British Museum’s collections, a stroll along the Thames, and a West End musical. · — 🏡 Countryside moments not to miss along the way 🍯 Cotswolds charming towns · Bibury: Arlington Row is England’s most photographed cottage; best visited early morning or before dusk · Bourton-on-the-Water: Known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds," great for families with kids · Stow-on-the-Wold: Famous for its Wednesday market, with antique shops and independent bookstores · Chipping Campden: Preserves its medieval layout, with old coaching inns and pubs lining the main street ⛰️ Lake District must-experiences · Windermere boat tour: Depart from Bowness Pier, watch the rolling hills on both sides of the lake · Grasmere Gingerbread Shop · Keswick: A charming town on the shores of Derwentwater · — 📝 Practical countryside travel tips ⏰ Best time to visit · May to June: Comfortable weather, roses and lavender bloom in gardens · September to October: Autumn colors deepen, fewer tourists, gentle sunshine · Avoid August public holidays in the UK, locals travel too and prices rise · 🗺️ Appendix: 7-day Countryside Soul Journey itinerary D1 Arrive in Edinburgh D2 Edinburgh city walk D3 Edinburgh --(3h drive/230km)-- Lake District (Windermere) D4 Lake District -- Manchester (Manchester Cathedral) -- Sheffield D5 Sheffield -- Cotswolds D6 Cotswolds -- Oxford D7 Oxford -- London D8 London · -

Golf Fang: A Fun 18+ Venue Packed with Entertainment — traveler post in Sheffield

Golf Fang: A Fun 18+ Venue Packed with Entertainment

Golf Fang is exclusively 18+, giving adults the opportunity to enjoy crazy golf without children around. The venue is highly entertaining, and we took loads of funny photos! With music filling the air, the space is vibrant, quirky, and brimming with personality. Beyond crazy golf, there’s karaoke, darts, pool, and of course, food and drinks. At hole 7, we even received cocktails delivered straight to us. Keep in mind two things: the crazy golf course isn’t wheelchair accessible, and parking nearby can be challenging, especially when Sheffield United has a home game—check BLUE BADGE spots at Sheldon St and Arley St. Despite these factors, it’s truly worth visiting. They excel at creating a fantastic atmosphere for a fun night out. Additionally, CARERS have free entry.

Tranquil Walk Along the Canal Path — traveler post in Sheffield

Tranquil Walk Along the Canal Path

We took the tram to town and made our way to Victoria Quays. Starting on the canal path, we quickly hit a closed section that diverted us onto main roads. The diversion covered a fair bit of distance before reconnecting with the canal path at Bacon Lane. Despite this, there was still a good stretch left, and we walked all the way up to Meadowhall. Wildlife was sparse, with just a few geese and ducks, but the area was peaceful, pretty, and not crowded. On this hot and sunny day, the path was dry and slightly dusty. At Tinsley Marina, we spotted numerous moored boats and overflowing locks, as well as a canal boat art piece called 'The Industry,' which was fascinating to see. Being surrounded by the quiet made it easy to forget we were in the heart of industrial areas, both past and present. The leisurely walk, including stops for photos and the diversion, lasted about two hours in total. It was an enjoyable activity, and best of all, completely free!

Chatsworth House

Absolutely fantastic. Would recommend the buggy ride around the garden. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The house and all the staff made you feel very welcome and relaxed. The markets are really good and have a very nice vibe and the house itself is decorated very well with a different theme every year. This year it's Henry and the Lion! The gardens are also lit up at night so definitely go for a walk after leaving the house if you have time. You will need to book tickets early ..

Winter Garden

Sheffield Winter Gardens is a very nice view. I drove by and didn't have too many expectations, so I had a lot of fun! The vegetation is very rich and there are many flowers. Overall, it's worth the trip!

The Moor Market Sheffield

A big market, just like a domestic vegetable market, where you can buy daily fruits, vegetables and meat, and you can also cut the meat into small pieces as required. There are often 10 mangoes for 1 pound or 2 boxes of grapes for 1 pound, which is quite affordable.
