St. Olav's Church

Tallinn’s St. Olaf’s Church (Oleviste kirik) was built in the 12th century and was the center of Tallinn’s old Scandinavian community until the Danish conquest of Tallinn in 1219. The earliest written record of the church dates back to 1267. The total height of the church tower is 125 meters, probably the tallest building in the world from 1549 to 1625. After several reconstructions, its minaret is now 123.8 meters high. From 1944 to 1991, the Soviet KGB used the steeple of St. Olaf’s church as a radio tower and monitoring point.
