Kaiping Diaolou, located in Kaiping City, Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province, is a special type of Chinese vernacular architecture. It is a multi-storey tower building integrating defensive, residential and Chinese and Western architectural arts. Its characteristics are Chinese and Western residential buildings, with a variety of styles, such as ancient Greece, ancient Rome and Islam. On June 25, 2001, it was approved by the State Council to be listed in the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. On June 28, 2007, "Kaiping Diaolou and Ancient Villages" was approved by the 31st World Heritage Congress of New Zealand and formally listed in the World Heritage List, becoming China's 35th World Heritage Site, which gave birth to China's first World Heritage Project of Overseas Chinese Culture.
