cycling and hiking to Macau picchu. no trains
Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). Often mistakenly referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas” (a title more accurately applied to Vilcabamba), it is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization. The Incas built the estate around 1450 but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Although known locally, it was not known to the Spanish during the colonial period and remained unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911.
Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its three primary structures are the Inti Watana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. Most of the outlying buildings have been reconstructed in order to give tourists a better idea of how they originally appeared. By 1976, thirty percent of Machu Picchu had been restored and restoration continues.
Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.

Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu
#thingstodo
Very well maintained and breathtaking! They have so many picture perfect spots. A bit of steep steps - so you need to be decently fit to be able to do the circuit. It took us around 2.5hrs with very generous breaks and stopping for many pictures and tour guide. Highly recommend getting a tour guide (around $80 USD for a private guide) to make the experience more enjoyable and you can soak in the Inka experience and understand the most city. It is very well maintained. It was warm and sunny in the morning. Recommend going early. We till the 7am ticket but reached there around 8am so that fog would have cleared. It was a picture perfect day for us. I heard you can go a little later if there is fog. Make sure to take pictures with the llamas up there.
Absolutely jawdropping awesome, it is about 15min of stairs to reach the top. You CAN take snacks and water in Plastic bottles they don't search your bag. The drive up with the bus is also beautiful but a little scary as the road is narrow with no barriers and a steep view down. I believe this is the most spectacular wonder of the world. Best to take the 6am tour then there are not a lot of tourists. Come see peru offered an amazing private tour for us.
Majestic Machu Picchu Trek
Exploring the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru was a journey back in time, surrounded by the mystique of the Inca civilization🌄. Perched high in the Andes, this world wonder isn't just about the destination; it's about the breathtaking journey to get there. Hiking the Inca Trail, with its stunning vistas and challenging terrain, was an experience that combined adventure with deep cultural immersion🥾.
Reaching Machu Picchu at sunrise was a moment of awe. Watching the first light illuminate the ruins, with the mist slowly lifting to reveal the intricate stonework, was a sight to behold🌅. It’s a photographer’s and historian's paradise, brimming with stories waiting to be uncovered.
For those embarking on this trek, I recommend acclimatizing in Cusco to adjust to the high altitude. Sturdy hiking boots and a good level of fitness are essential for enjoying the trail👟. Hiring a local guide not only enriches the experience with historical insights but also supports the local community.
Be mindful of the delicate nature of the ruins. It’s important to respect this UNESCO World Heritage site by following the marked paths and guidelines🚶♂️.
Remember, the weather can be unpredictable, so pack rain gear and sunscreen. Staying hydrated is key to combating altitude sickness💧.

Chinchero Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Welcome to the unique Chinchero in Peru
Chinchero, in Inca culture, is the place where the rainbow is born, and Chinchero has always been known as the weaving capital of Peru. It is located between Machu Picchu and Cusco, and because the Urubamba River is considered a sacred river, the valley is called the Sacred Valley. This was the main settlement of the Incas in the Andes Valley during the Inca Empire. The town is small and is a place that everyone who participates in the Sacred Valley group will not miss. This is the first stop of the Sacred Valley day tour.
🌟Town Highlights
1️⃣ Iglesia Colonial de Chinchero: The town church, the murals are very exquisite;
2️⃣ Mercado de Chinchero: Chinchero market, every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday will set up stalls in the square in front of the church, you can also see the scene of local villagers exchanging their own goods here;
3️⃣ Centro de Textiles Tradicionales: The best handicraft shop in the town;
4️⃣ Ruinas Inca: Inca ruins on the edge of the town.
🚉Travel Strategy:
Most tourists will choose the Chinchero+Moray Terraces+Salinas Salt Pans+Ollantaytambo one-way day tour departing from Cusco. This kind of day tour usually ends at Ollantaytambo at 14:30. You can take the subsequent train after 15:00 to Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu; stay overnight in Aguas Calientes, and start your Machu Picchu itinerary the next day.
●Travel agencies in the streets and alleys of Cusco can provide such day tours, the price is about 70-90 soles, depending on your bargaining power.
Montaña Salkantay Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
🏔️🩵 Salkantay Pass - Best Summer Trek! ❤️🥰
#summerbreak
If you have more than a week in Cusco and want to visit Machu Picchu, at the same time you want a little bit of adventure, make sure you visit Salkantay!
Salkantay is a very strenuous hike and the Pass is definitely the hardest. On the second day of the trek, you will reach the highest point of the trek, which is the Salkantay Pass. There you will see snow-peaked mountains. If you are lucky, you can also spot some llamas and alpacas just roaming around the mountains and lakes! Hiking to the mountain is like watching an adventure movie! The hike is hard and it might feel hard at first but there are lots of companions along the way so it’s easy to find other fellow travelers! Don’t miss that trek out especially that the trek ends in Machu Picchu!
Aguas Calientes Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
An intelligent visit to Machu Picchu
The bimodal trip from Cusco to aguas calientes to visit Machu Picchu:
- you buy at the website and chose between: inka train or Peru rail. As foreigners you can only buy tourist trips starting at 56 dollars.
- you take a mini van from inka train terminal to ollantaytambo and then the train to Machu Picchu town (known also as aguas calientes as they have hot springs)
- Buy the bus ticket to Machu Picchu in advance in the office and the mountain MP near the plaza de armas in a cultural center
- buy the tickets to Machu Picchu in the official website, check that there are several trails and check availability on every trail. Everyone buys either one or two and there is always place for the 3 and 4
- near the main square you can buy the tickets one day in advance but is always full of people and you have to usually wait under the rain
- book a guide with your hotel, they usually charge you 150 soles for private tour. Ours, Agustín, was a lovely one.
