Machu Picchu The ruins of the ancient city of the southern Inca Empire in Peru are the most famous tourist destination in Peru and a UNESCO-approved human cultural heritage site. "Machu Picchu" means "old mountain top" in the Inca language. It is located on a plateau 112 kilometers northwest of the capital of the ancient Inca Empire, Cusco, surrounded by mountains and steep cliffs on both sides of the ancient city, with the turbulent Urubamba River below.
